Micra k12 completely dead

Hi

I was driving / parking and my 2005 Micra just died. Just glad it did't happen driving at speed. Thought I may have stalled it at first, but nothing happened when I turned the key. Virtually nothing works.

Turn the key and engine does not turn over or even click. Anyone any idea what it could be?
Initial thoughts were ignition switch, NATS, battery, fuse

None of the following work:
-hazards
-windows
-radio
-wipers
-indicators
-boot

Have checked the battery and it has full charge. The only thing that does work are the headlights and their fine.

Have checked the fuses and don't seem to be the issue.

The immobiliser (NATS) red car symbol with a key is flashing and stays flashing when key is turned. From what I've found on the internet this means that NATS hasn't tripped.

Don't know how I would go about testing an ignition switch.

Any suggestions / help would be much appreciated, as I can't afford nissan garage prices at the moment.

Thanks

Matt

we had a k12 with a problem similar to this at work, it tured out to be one of the fuses that are actually on the battery rather than in the fuse box

Thanks for the response.

I checked the fuses next to the battery, but they all look fine. One more thing ruled out though.

Thanks again

Matt..

Have you tried the fuse under the steering wheel (well sort of under - its more to the right - just under the headlight adjuster). Open the cover, see the fuse BATT - 10A - check both.. Fuse no 7 n 8 see if anything gone wrong there.

The K12 is notorious for electrical faults, including failed ignition switches, relays, fuse block base receptacle contacts failure, and the wire terminations under the fuse block bases! This is mostly due to poor quality termination connections and moisture ingress in and under the fuse base blocks in the engine bay.

To trace and resolve this issue requires a circuit diagram, a multimeter, and basic electrical fault finding/repair knowledge. The quickest cost effective solution is to find a mobile auto electrician. Best to avoid Nissan dealers (£ stealers), and backstreet garages unless you know them to be good at auto electrics as found on the following good garage guide in your area.

Good luck and let us know how this pans out?

Thanks to everyone that responded, have managed to find the fault.

When I originally checked the fuse connected to the positive terminal of the battery, a didn't realise there are several other fuses as part of the same unit, which can't easily be seen without disconnecting the positive from the battery. Looks like one of the fuses had become corroded and failed. Not come across battery set up before, but for anyone else with a similar problem it's called a "fusible fuse link" part no "2438079908" they're about £45, but managed to get one from a local breakers for £10.

Just got to get the steroid code now and it's all sorted.

Well done! Thanks for letting us know. K 12 electrical fault “fusible link fault” exactly as you describe is already well-known notorious in the public domain listed on the link I referred you to.

http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/nissan/micra-k12-2003/?section=good

Listed under what’s good and what’s bad, what to watch out for, bullet point number 24, dated 3-3-12 as follows:

3-3-2012: Notorious fault is severe corrosion of the fusible link holder, which is situated underneath the nearside headlamp unit. Rated at 30 amps, this piece of cheap and nasty, plastic framework (costing £64.97) suffers from very poor design of the waterproofing housing which results in moisture build-up inside the housing.

Note the Nissan dealer silly parts prices?

On the notorious K12 repeated failures list is only another 40 bullet points to watch out for and keep you busy? Happy days, happy motoring, good luck!

I am almost sure i know the problem disconnect the positive from the battery tilt the wires so you can see the 4wires that come into the connection look through the clear plastic if you see any green deposits prise the plastic up and clean if there is a. Break that is your problem clean of and bridge it with solder using a good soldering iron i hope i have been helpfull to your problem

Here's my experience of faulty electrics...
I had left my K12 manual Micra in the drive for some months and kept starting every couple of weeks to keep it 'alive'. I somehow left it too long at the last attempt and the battery went flat. I thought it was the key remote battery. So changed both key batteries - nothing. I have had to rig up a manual cable pull to release the bonnet because of previous issues with the car battery. Charged battery. I then put key in and attempted to start the car. There was a flurry of lights from the dash, but not in the way you normally associate with starting but still no start. From this point on, all I get is the NATS light blinking at me regardless of what position the key is in. The remote triggers the indicators in the normal way, but only on the dash - not outside. No headlights either. I have tried most of the tricks to 'reset' the system:
Remove negative for 30 minutes
Remove negative then the positive and short the 2 terminals (not the battery terminals I hasten to add)
Turned the key from off to on 6 times within 10 seconds - after 2 seconds the indicators are meant to flash (they didn't) and then press the unlock button for 5 seconds, then press the lock button 3 times. Still nothing.

I have tried other versions of the above sequence. All I get is the NATS light blinking at me.

I have an OBD II Autolink scan tool, but seeing as I couldn't get the ignition to light up, there was no power at the OBD connection to power the unit - dead end there.

Of course all of the above was actually redundant, given the real problem - see below.

Thinking back, the Christmas tree lighting effect I got, indicated an intermittent or breaking down connection as if it was on it's last legs. I proceeded to check the normal fuses, near the drivers door and the main block under the bonnet, near the battery. All tested okay. As I was looking round the battery area, I saw more fuses, these were part of the positive terminal bolted to the positive post of the battery (as mentioned by HonestMal - thanks for that). I thought I may as well check their continuity, so took it off the vehicle for further inspection. As I cleaned the inevitable crap surrounding most parts of engine bay components after 15 years of use, I noticed green corrosion under the plastic covering 2 of the 4 fuses. It turned out one was completely gone, although there was nothing connected to that particular one, but the second one looked physically okay, but electrically was not - I had found the issue. The big red cable that this should have powered up, was probably the power for the dash to come on and airbags, fuel pump etc. To test, I rigged up a temp fused line to connect everything and checked the car...phey.....fixed. Ebay soon sourced a replacement for about a tenner...no contest. Just waiting for it to arrive.
Hope this helps someone...
