Micra k12 1.4 Timing chain sorted......new problem, can anyone help please?

Hi all,

I hope someone can help.... I'm getting to the point of taking a REAL BIG hammer to the Micra.

I had all the usual signs of a stretched timing chain.... error messages, poor acceleration etc. After checking the tensioner, which was at 21mm I figured that it was the problem. I took the engine out, gearbox and did the whole demolition to replace the chain. I managed to fit the new one, however I'm not sure if the VVC locked as when I was tightening it back onto the camshaft it slipped...... the chain didn't slip a tooth though as the tensioner was set. I blow air into the oil feed hole again and it moved back..... as far as it would go and felt it lock. I put the engine back in and tried starting it..... there was a slight leak on the exhaust at the manifold joint but started ok...... it ticks over ok and not hunting like it was, it will rev but it is a bit hesitant and not very takes a bit to settle down. I have an app called "Piston" to check for error codes.....there are non coming up now, however the throttle position sensor is not sending any data to the app and it is staying at zero. I don't know if I might have not plugged it back on.....as I unplugged so many sensors and switches. I don't even know where it is. If anyone has any ideas I would be eternally grateful!

Thanks
Bryn

have you checked the plug/connector for the soleniod (offside rear on the cam cover) and the plug for the cam sensor bryn ?

Hi Frank, Thanks for the reply..... I took so many sensors and plugs off I am pretty sure there is opportunity for me to have forgot to replace one or maybe two. Do you know if the car would rev if there was no signal from the throttle position sensor?.....as on the "Piston" app to read and reset error codes it is not reading anything at all.... give me a mk 2 escort any day!!!. Oh the days of points and carbs !!!

Thanks again Frank, I am trying to fix this thing with a back injury so it may take me most of the day as I have to drag myself back under the car to fit the exhaust gaskets I have had to buy so I can make sure it doesn't leak and cause problems.

Oh also..... sorry about this, I seem to be dripping a little oil from the driveshaft, could this be I just haven't pushed it in far enough.?

Thanks
Bryn

i,ve never worked on a k12 i,m afraid bryn, so the only advice i can give is to look for any loose wires :)

You may find it worthwhile to double check all of the plug-in wiring connections around and under the engine and under the inlet manifold, bell housing and gearbox, that you may have not reconnected?

Especially check for temperature sensors that may be located near or under the thermostat housing assembly.

Throttle position sensor TPS, consists of two sensors linked to the accelerator pedal and talks to the ECU via fly by wire can bus datacoms.

Throttle plate position is operated by a motorised actuator on the throttle body.

Your Piston/program reader may not be monitoring what is actually happening on the motorised actuator of the throttle plate or the TPS.

To further test your TPS query, I suggest you look down through the top of the throttle body at throttle plate operation whilst an assistant reves the motor via the accelerator pedal?

Good luck!

Its prob your leaky exhaust mate. If it runs ok but leaks at exhaust the oxy sensors will read lean as its drawing in air. Fix exhaust first then check. It could even be air in your fuel rail. If you turn key on and off for a few seconds several times then start it up see if it bleeds it through.

Thanks for all the advice guys, I have fixed the exhaust & now using a different OBD software on my laptop. It is seeing the throttle sensor now so probable the one I was using previous didn't monitor it?.... I have left it several weeks up the drive now as with my back injury when I spend any time under the car or bent over the engine bay, it puts me on my back for a few days. Anyway I started it today and it started no problem...... but quite rattly in the mid to gearbox end of the engine.... the timing chain sounds sweet..... no rattling from the front end...... the tick over is quite smooth for a few minutes ( steady 1000 rpm ), then it falls and stalls. If I rev it it rattles its nuts off around what is probably third cylinder...... then ticks like the old cam followers. There are no faults coming up on the diagnostics..... The only thing I can think is the fuel trim short term shows -25 even if I rev the throttle or tick over...... if I unplug the sensor on the top of the engine cover (MAF / MAP??) the car revs ok but the rattle remains. Could I have a faulty sensor and a sticking ca follower?..... would the oil eventually fill the lifter on the cam follower and sort the lag on reving and stop the rattle?... do you think I need to change the MAP/MAF sensor as well?
Thanks again guys........ oh by the way thought I would check the timing but the clip for the HT lead on my timing gun has nothing to connect to.... any ideas?

a timing gun is,nt much use on a coilpack engine really bryn (non adjustable anyway eh) and they are,nt hydraulic lifters
