Maiko the Road Rally Car

Haha, I guess you don't expect to see an escort sliding around a corner - I don't in boring old England anyway....

One day I'll come over for a road rally, haven't got a clue how they work but I'll give it a shot

Do it.. It's something you have to come and see to appreciate!
Nothing quite like standing in the middle of nowhere at 2 in the morning ;)

Doing a 'proper' Welsh road rally is on my list of things to do one day....

Will be out (hopefully) on the Bath Festival Road Rally next month :)

Was planning on doing that too..
Think the plan is to just crack on and get an engine built instead!

Well, finally getting back out in 2016!
Micra has had a few changes and more importantly a new headgasket!

Out on Saturday on the Border 100 rally, and later on in the month on The Eagle rally. Now with Expert navs, so should be interesting!

I'm well behind with updating this blog!

Border 100 rally was a DNF, first DNF due to mechanical problems ever! (Bent wishbone was driver error on Pacemaker ;) )
Car began overheating after the first couple of miles and with a 25 mile first selective there wasn't much hope of stopping to check without losing any time so pushed on and kept an eye on things
Made it to the end of the selective before searching for a river to get some water..

Eagle rally was much better! Started at car 54 with a different nav (again), caught up with the car in front in the first forest section and lost a shed load of time due to dust (and not being let past when we caught them on a lane). Then had the same problem in the next forest until they made a mistake and we got past.
Car was still overheating but nowhere near as bad as the Border 100, just crept up being sat waiting at time controls. The small weld on the hydraulic handbrake rod also snapped, so no handbrake until I had a chance to tighten the cable back up at petrol (it still didn't really work that well).

Couple of overshoots and got stuck behind another competitor stuck on a white, but probably one of the best events I've done and driven on, really felt the car was spot on handling wise and was confident with my driving, so thoroughly enjoyed the night!

Finished 20th Overall despite losing a good few minutes of time throughout the night!

Unfortunately the Micra will be taking a back step for a few months with a new project beginning... RWD this time!

Ahhh I keep forgetting about this blog! Three rallies to update.....

I competed on a local nav scatter, which resulted in overheating... The new headgasket was swapped and the head skimmed having noticed some pitting that had ruined the gasket again.

So firstly the Powys Lanes starting from Builth Wells. Seeded at car 48 with a novice navigator. We managed to miss a small section which cost us 4 fails. This topped off with being stuck behind a broken down car cost us a possible half decent result, but it's all iffs and buts ;) Again, we suffered from overheating.

A new automatic radiator and higher pressure radiator cap for the next rally two weeks later, the Peak Revs in Ludlow. This being a non-spotlight event, we also swapped for the facelift front end with better headlights.
This time seeded at car 15 with a friend navigating for me, we managed to set some decent times, being 12th overall at petrol. Unfortunately a missed hairpin near the finish lost us 3:30 and put us down to 16th at the finish. Again, we suffered from overheating.

With just one week until the next event, the (fairly new) thermostat was checked, which was found to not be opening. Finally, we thought we had found the problem! So a new thermostat went in.

Next up was the Cilwendeg, the biggest road rally. Seeded at car 67, I was hoping for a nice fun night and hopefully a finish.

On an icy November night, we started off great with less power than other cars (being the smallest capacity engine out of 90 cars). Unfortunately, we began to overheat very quickly after around 35-40 miles, forcing us to retire.

So after many fixes, the last plan is to replace the head or build a new engine.

The Micra will now go into hibernation so I can finish building my BMW 318ti Compact :)

Okay so maybe I lied about the hibernation bit... The Beamer is a PITA and is taking way too long to finish!

So the Micra was entered for the Gremlin Road rally.
Seeded at car 38 and hoping for no more overheating problems now that a new head had been fitted. Was a really tough event with the whites being really rough and tough on the car, as well as a couple of wrong slots losing us upwards of 8 minutes. Second half started with the navigators potti light breaking, meaning he couldn't see the map very well for around 80 miles.
Overheating problems now solved and managed to do an impressive 8mpg.......!
Result was 27th overall with 1 fail due to not getting codeboard signed.

Next up was the Night Owl rally, starting car 44 with one of my mates navigating.
Again a really rough event that would have suited a much larger car, but had great fun for the definite last event for the Micra.
Had one huge wrong slot that lost us nearly 7 minutes, and 2 fails for non signature of codeboards that put us down to 40th overall.
Again, the Micra didn't overheat so I was really please to get the car to the finish!

Unfortunately, it really was the last event for the Micra.. The money that could be gained from selling parts would mean that the BMW can be finished, and the MK2 Escort that has appeared here can be started..
So the Micra has officially been broken for parts and is ready for the scrap yard!
