MAF Information

Hi all,

Been kicking the issue around on PM for a while with Frank so credit his way for information/thoughts. I had the 'usual' MAF issue (2000 onwards coilpack 1.0) and had tried an eBay pattern MAF which lasted for about 500 miles. The hesitation came back but I was still getting 45+ MPG so stuck with it for a while. I became irritated with the hesitation and was determined to get an OEM-quality MAF back in. The Bosch MAF is not 'officially' available...

0 280 218 094 is now in my Micra and seems to be working a treat. Idle speed has perked up a touch and the hesitation has disappeared. I don't have any data on MPG or how it pulls at 70+mph but will update the thread when I have further info on this. The test drive thus far consisted of around town and country lanes ;)

Very Good thread, be interesting to see other viable maf replacements, where have you mounted your unit? (DId you say this was the coilpack motor, are the TB's similar to pre coil?)

Yes this is 2000-2002 coilpack; the >2000 TB is not similar to this unit. The actual sensor has been removed from the small section of inlet tract it usually lives in and has been installed in the stock location.
 
i have a 1.0l coilpack on 2000, on idle it sounds like its going to stall then picks up again and seems flat compared to usual could this be my problem and which airflow meter would you recommend as i dont fancy payin over the odds for a new throttle body :/ ,

Hi Belly,

A simple way of determining whether your MAF sensor is at fault is to unplug the sensor (with the engine turned off and the key out of the ignition) then go for a drive. If the flatness/hesitation has disappeared then you have isolated the fault to the MAF sensor*

With the MAF sensor unplugged the car will default back to 'known safe' fuelling levels as opposed to adhering to the fluctuating signals (thus giving fluctuating fuelling and strange driving characteristics) that a faulty MAF sensor will deliver. Bear in mind this is for diagnostic purposes; it's not a permanent 'solution' because with the MAF sensor unplugged your miles-per-gallon will decrease drastically and the idle speed may drop to a point where the engine will die unless you feather the throttle. It makes it exciting trying to press the accelerator/brake together and using the handbrake to stop ;). Also with the MAF sensor unplugged the 'check engine' warning light may illuminate on the dashboard; this can be got rid of by unplugging the battery negative terminal (I think I left it for a couple of hours as I had some food but I'm guessing you probably only need to have the battery disconnected for 10-15 minutes until the capacitors in the ECU drain thus resetting the error code).

The best MAF sensor to fit would be... a Bosch MAF sensor from a scrapped/crashed/whatever'd Micra. I'm still not 100% on the fitment of the MAF sensor I have put into mine because I haven't had a chance to evaluate the miles-per-gallon yet although the car is driving fine. Honestly if you put something in your car that's for a different application you're on your own as to the consequences. For example I have no idea what the 'with Thermistor' description is all about and whether the OEM Bosch Micra sensor has a Thermistor or not :cool: I fitted the 0 280 218 094 so if you're thinking of doing that the best thing would be to try and find a used OEM Bosch from one of the following:

This all came about for me because I don't think the eBay MAF sensors are up to much.




*this is not 100% foolproof by which I mean yes your MAF sensor may have 'gone bad' but it's possible some other factor has caused it to fail in which case it could happen again with a new MAF. Unlikely but something to keep in mind.

You can buy the Primera 1.8 genuine Bosch MAF on exchange from Andrew Page or Eurocarparts for around £50 + deposit.
This type of hot-film MAFs tend to wear out between 70K and 100K miles.
Ebay MAFs very hit and miss and not much cheaper.

Not sure if the thermistor is fitted on the Micra MAFs? If there are 5 wires going to the MAF plug, it is. If only 4, then it isn't
The terminals are present on the Primera MAF sensor and the thermistor can be moved from the faulty MAF.
Very early 1.8 had an external air intake temp sensor. Around 2001 it used an on MAF temp sensor.
 
My mam has a 51 plate 1.8 primers sport would it be worth me trying that to see if it makes a difference?
 
Yes. A 51 plate Primera will have the temp sensor on the MAF, if the Micra doesn't it is just ignored.

Just in case you don't know, push the arrow in the centre top of the connector forwards and it will unlatch the connector from the MAF.

Not sure if the housing (second pic on the first post) is the same size on the Primera and Micra?
To remove just the sensor (last pic), you will need a Security Torx driver (star with a hole) T20 size I think. Available from Car Shops, ebay, etc.
 
an oddball 5 pointed star torx driver eh, and the micra ones probably fail because the t/b is solidly mounted to the engine, where-as the QG ones are mounted into the rubber induction piping eh (subject to far less vibration)
 
Would it be possible to relocate the maf sensor if I used the primera sensor? Maybe use the whole primers box?
 
The maf on my mans car is mounted to the air box I'll get a pick next time im at hers frank thinking. Put the whole box in and pipe up just extend plug wires to fit :)
 
the CGA (1.4) is crying out for that sort of setup imo, but i think a 1.0 coilpack would need a high state of tune to warrant it tbh (eg, cams, compression hike and 8k rpm)

Any updates on your MAF test? I've been running few years with and without MAF after my OEM Bosch failed. My second China-MAF just broke down two days before my registration expired... I'm waiting for new China-MAF again, but I'd be rather interested in replacing it with proper Bosch version as soon as possible :)
