Locked steering / dead car

Hey guys,

I've just bought a used k12 and the steering has locked and ignition won't start. Nissan are saying it'll be over a grand to fix and not worth it - if anyone has any advice or knowledge on a problem like this id be happy to hear it!

Anyway, I'm wondering what my best option might be in trying not to lose every single penny I spent on this car. Any ideas on scrapping? Because it doesn't turn on and steering is locked I can't even sell it for scraps.

Any thoughts are welcome!! Thanks guys

Hi - Is it manual or auto, and does it have keyless go (ie they key does not need to be inserted in the lock, it just needs to be in the car)?
My father in law is always forgetting to have the key with him, or the key battery has gone flat, or he doesn't put it in P before trying to start, or....
He has called the garage a few times when it was his error, so do check the simple things.

I assume you aren't a member of a recovery service or you would have called them by now so they can read any fault codes.
Otherwise I would never go to a main dealer with a problem like this, you need to find a smaller garage ideally one specialising in your make of car.

Hey Joe,

It's manual and it is a keyless start yes, but id always used the actual key blade.

RAC did come and have a look at it and check the fault codes and fuses and couldn't figure it out. So they took it to Nissan. I assume it would cost me to get it from Nissan to anywhere else cos it doesnt move lol

Did the RAC tell you what the fault codes were and have Nissan done any additional inspection and told you what needs to be done for £1K?
Joe

RAC didn't tell me what the fault codes were, I was under the impression there were no faults...but I could be wrong

The general guesses were it was the ignition barrel, probs need a new one and new set of keys.

Nissan have just said they've had a look at it and can't figure it out. It'll probably need a new steering column and new configuration of the keys which will take about 2-3 weeks cos they have to wait for a Nissan tech to come down. I am going to call them again to get a final diagnosis that I can have in writing because I need to know what's wrong!

The more I think about it, it sounds like they have no idea so they just wanna get rid of me, or replace the whole thing rather than find the one fault.

Thanks Joe

That's why I would not take an older car to a main dealer. There may be good mechanics there but some of them are lost if the computer doesn't tell them exactly what the fix is and they will start replacing (expensive) parts one by one as a way of fault finding.

Do ask for a definite diagnosis, then do some ringing around to find a local garage and get their advice. Trouble is a lot of new or second hand items need to be coded to the car and a general garage may not be able to do that. Be a bit cheeky and ask if the main dealer can recommend a local independent Nissan specialist as you cant afford their bill.
It may cost you some money to get it towed but could save a lot overall.
Good luck
Joe

The supplying car dealer is responsible to sort out faults under EU & UK retail consumer protection laws.

Good luck.

Private sale unfortunately - so I really don't want this to be a big fat waste of money! Only had the car a week :(

Nissan said they weren't sure if changing the barrel would be enough to fix the issue. I think also because the key would have to be reprogrammed...I'm not an expert as you can tell and nissan haven't actually given me any written report yet so I can only refer to the short conversations we had on the phone.

What do you think?

Ok. I’m not really that clue’ed up on this bit of the car, I just know I have a set. You know where I am if you need it.

I think you don't need to reprogram your key since you only change the barrel. You just take the electronic part from your key and the "metal" part from the set you want to buy.
I don't think the barrel has any electronic inside! My opinion!

The stuff I have is 3 keys, just the metal bit and like Alin2225 said, you attach the Fob bit onto it. And door, boot and barrel lock.

Let me look for them tonight, I had them the other day so they won’t be far.. and I’ll attach a photo. Not sure how much so just make me an offer, nothing silly I’m not expecting a lot for them!

But let me post pictures first.

Jason.

Could I get the boot switch if possible? Mines has completely stopped working (just the push button type that suffers from water ingress) only if the original OP doesn't want and you are willing to.

Hey.

Sorry for the long delay, I was working away before Christmas and only just got back this message. This is what I have if you want to make me an offer.

I originally got it from Nissan back in 2006/2007 I think. I’ve attach pictures.

Brand new lock set.
