lightening standard flywheel?

is this wise?

to me it seems unsafe as the wheel will have been built to work at its best (strength wise) at the weight it is.

so reducing its weight will obv be an improvemet for the engine but how safe will it be? is it likey to break causing damage?

so the question is good idea/bad idea? or try get a custom one made?

The japanese do it all the time (Muholland lightweight flywheels for the k11 are just the standard flywheel thats been machined down in various places to remove weight). On that note its also important where you remove the weight. Removing all the weight from the centre is not nearly as effective as taking the weight from the outer edge. Removing 1kg from the outer edge can give the same results as removing 2kg from the centre of the fly - see what i mean?)

There is such a thing as making the flywheel TOO light though. the Japanese dont have any 1.6 k12's so you cant really have a look and see what they're doing (because to be frank, if they're not doing it there's a very high chance its not worth doing). You're on your own with this one. Nissan may already be using a fairly light flywheel to give the car its revvy feel - and they're compensating for poor drivers by altering the electronic throttle response.

Do it when you wear the clutch out.

agreed

Oh and ignore phil when he says you lose torque - There's only positive things to be gained from a lightweighter flywheel if your car already has a heavy one. :D:D

DO IT!!!:D
