Lift vs Duration for Performance Cams

Spoke to Autosprint Cams today (they do performance cams for the Micra K11) and he suggested that its more the duration of a cam that gives the performance gains, rather than the lift.

I currently have 270deg 9mm lift cams and wanted to go for 270-290deg 10.5mm cams and he suggested it wouldn't make much of a difference since duration is the same for both cams.

When I asked about raising duration, he suggested 270-290deg is really the longest duration anyone would want in order to have a well-behaved (ish) road car.

Not knocking him down or anything, I am sure he has much more experience and knowledge than me, after all he is the one making the cams! But I always thought it was the lift that made more of a difference rather than the duration? Trying to gauge whether the 270deg 10.5mm cams would be worth it?
