K12 1.0 2003 starting issues and camshaft position sensor fault light

Hi all, new to the forum, I'll start from the beginning of my issues.
My girlfriends 2003 1.0 k12 (she's had it since jan 14, unfortunately the service history is very poor, doesn't appear to be a stamp in the book since 37K and its now on 80K)!
End of August the starter motor went, sounded as though the solenoid didn't retract the gear and it carried on running. I removed it and checked the commutator and brushes and braids were ruined, all chewed up and in bits. Fitted a new item from Eurocarparts, and every time on starting warm or cold the starter sounded rough, as if something was misaligned. Continued to use the car as and when, and then the EML light came on, for Camshaft position sensor fault. The car also now fails to start sometimes, and hunts I'm guessing on the choke when its cold, and occasionally stalls whilst its hunting. When its warm and running I can't see or hear too much difference in the car, still seems slow but nothing different to normal.
Ive removed the camshaft sensor and cleaned it and refitted it, there were a few filings on it but nothing major, and reset the EML light again.
Im guessing this is going to be the dreaded stretched timing chain issue. Does anyone know if the initial starter motor failure could be linked to this? Or is it just time and mileage and poor servicing thats likely to have caused it?
The cars only worth £700/800 tops, if it is the timing chain I'm not sure it would really be worth fixing money wise? Im fairly competent mechanics wise but i think engine out and a timing chain change is beyond me.
Cheers guys!:)
