I have had a one off problem with my 98 1.3. K11. After driving 4 miles from cold on a fairly mild day last week I pulled in and could hear an engine noise that I have come across before. It was a sort of tinkle from the area of the top cam chain. It did not sound like the usual cam chain thrash on start-up before the hydraulic tensioners pump up. It was too dark to get my stethescope out to pin the source down, so.......
My questions are;
1) What does an untensioned top chain alone sound like?
2) Does the top tensioner wear out or need cleaning? It has not happened since, or during the 6 months that I have been using the car so I am puzzled.
3) If the tensioner has failed, could I see it when running through the oil filler cap with a strobe?
