k10 speedometer removal

I want to fit a new speedometer back plate to my k10 and i managed to get at it and unclip various bits of it but i can't get it off because i don't know how to remove the needle in the centre, i have seen other people with modded speedometers how can i do it?

my needle is an 'interference-fit' and so if you take a firm grip of the needle at the centre hub ...it should pull off of the spindle

also, i want to spray my dashboard with some pearlescant blue paint, is there any really dumb mistakes i might make that would ruin the whole thing?
