K10 1.0 auto timing belt change...full kit or just belt?

Just spoke with motor factor. I asked them to quote me on a quality timing belt.

Chap comes back and says "in my experience mate you need to buy the whole kit, which includes the tensioner and also I'd buy a water pump, 'cos when you're doing the timing belt, you are going to disturb the water pump and invariably that'll make it leak about 2,000 miles later."

Is there much truth in that? Do I really need a belt, tensioner and a water pump? Or is he trying to sell me stuff I don't really need?

Car has covered 45,000 miles from new FWIW, and is a 1991 reg.

Yes definitely do the water pump. They usually cost £25-35 or so. Tensioner usually they are ok, I have personally never heard of one breaking, its always the belt.

As I said yesterday, your car is well overdue on basic maintenance! So definitely do that. Don't forget antifreeze too!
