@ R-Reg...Marina Car Park would be a no go...i have nightmares of that dreaded day i went there in the Micra and totally destroyed my wheel :(

I doubt i'd even make it to Brighton, without having something fall off/break on the way down lol

@ Mcgregornw... thanks for the link! A Hard Top will hopefully be next on my list (it was gonna be bigger tyres, but will be taking the Superlites off now till next year) thats quite pricey for one,as i know they vary between £250-450. Unfortunately i dont get paid till end of the month :(

Went over to Norfolk Areana today for their monthly Drift Practice. Weather was perfect and the track was extremely smooth! Will wait for my mate to upload his photos of me going round the track, and i'll post them up.

Heres my mate's Seirra that joined me on the track day:

IMG_0004.jpg

IMG_0003.jpg

I'll fast forward to 3pm,i was out on track coming round the back corner and i suddenly lost all power. So i pulled over out of the way and turned the ignition and there was nothing. Looked in my wing mirror and i saw the rear 1/4 bubbling! So i jumped outta the car and ran to the back, opened the boot and a huge cloud of smoke poured out. The battery was on fire! Once a marshal had extinguished the fire,we pushed it back to the pits to have a better look.

It looks like the battery clamp (thats hooked onto the chassis) had touched the Positive terminal and that ended up in detinating the battery, setting the surround carpet alight in the mean time! So we took the battery out for a better look:

IMG_0236.jpg

Ooops! At least i can say i done it proply! Most people blow tyres at a drift day,i happen to blow up batteries! A pair of new terminals and a new battery and jobs a good 'un!

Small Update:

Had this arrive in the post this week:

IMG_0248.jpg

IMG_0249.jpg

It was just taped on,need to get it sprayed and then it'll be fitted :)

Yesterday i removed the fog lamp that was bolted to the bottom of the bumper:

IMG_0009.jpg

And converted one of the Reverse Lamps into a Fog :)

IMG_0001.jpg

Also trial fitted my 14s that i had laying about (where gonna be my Winter wheels for the Micra, but had an issue with longer rear studs + wheel nuts = would tighten but still able to move the wheel!)

I think they suit the car quite well, shame they werent wider...or had a smaller offset

Met up with a mate yesterday to start work with the diff removal. Was quite suprised how high the jack went...

2011-11-01093824.jpg

Once on axle stands we doused all the bolts/nuts with penitration oil, with the help of an impact gun the drive shafts and prop shaft was removed. Last thing to do was to remove the brace which goes between the gearbox and diff, one of the bolts was stuck and wouldnt come out.

2011-11-01120502.jpg

Abit of jiggling about and the help of more WD40 and a blow torch, the bolt finally came out. Now came the fun part and that was to strip the diff down. Heres the majority of the diff stripped down and all cleaned up

2011-11-01131616.jpg

The diff ready to be welded!

2011-11-01130518.jpg

A 40 mile round trip later and the diff is welded. The guy who done the welding said he tacked it and clamped it,and upon welding it the planet gears had moved. Which then made the centre out of line. Abit of filing/cutting and it'll line up with the grooves in the basket. So we done that and it still wouldnt fit,the shorter half shaft went in fine, but the other one wouldnt go in. With the planet gears out of line, the plate on top (where the larger part of the half shaft goes into) was also out of line, which meant the half shaft wouldnt go in.

2011-11-01162315.jpg

So after stripping the diff back down again,we still couldnt think of any other way to fix it. Our only option was to source another set of planet gears (which was highly unlikely) or another whole diff.

Today i met up with my mate to collect the diff, where he then took it to H&S Performance where Mike managed to remove the planet gears and re-welded it. Having the half shafts there, they could fit them to make sure it was all lined up. Dale then went back to the garage and re-built the diff, which is now ready to go back onto the car which will be Friday.

Took the Mazda out for a 'test drive' with the new welded diff. I know i've named the video Drifting, and i know i'm not actually drifting...but you know what i mean!

Thoughts on the Welded Diff:

ITS AWESOME! Makes drifting/skidding sooo much easier, just need to practice feathering the throttle to make the corners better, but i'm slowly getting the hang of it.

Driving the car day to day feels exactly the same! (probably because i dont floor it round corners anyway) Reversing is abit sketchy, feels like the car wants to kangeroo but then decides it doesnt.

All in all...a thumbs up!

Couldnt do a test run without a short video!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHPtH6eSYf8

Still waiting for my bits and pieces to be sprayed,i guess the weather doesnt help either :(

Small update...

Diff oil got changed today ready for the Drift day this saturday

Fitted my TSIs

IMG_0051.jpg

The reason they're blue is because it's my new colour scheme, Vauxhall Arden Blue (but only details will be going blue). Heres a teaser of my wheels:

Thought it was time to upgrade the headlights,so bought some Crystal Clear 7" units from Ebay

Before (left) and After (right)

IMG_0044.jpg

Had major problems with the screws rusting, but managed to sort it out.

IMG_0056.jpg

IMG_0059.jpg

With the TSIs fitted, they only allow a single light. So i decided to wire up some indicators to my front reflectors. Abit of cutting and wiring later they were working! Luckily i had some bulb holders from my Micra side repeaters that i bought ages ago, knew there was a reason why i kept them...

Thanks Guy :)

Yet another epic day at Norfolk Arena! Weather was dry but was quite windy and very cold! The track was damp to begin with but dried up by lunch time.

First few runs and i just kept spinning and the car had far too much grip. So a swap of the front wheels to green steels and the removal of the quick release boss, just leaving the dished Momo wheel and i headed back to the track.

The car started to kangeroo down the back straight and no one could figure out why, checked the rear tyres and i had 1x 185 and 1x 165 tyre. A swap around and the car pulled like a train! The car was still understeering very badly,so once back at the pits adjusted the tyre pressures and went back out. This time i had absolutely NO grip at all,a quick inspection and the front tyres were bald and the O/S front tyre had a bulge in it. Swapped them for a pair of 13s and dropped the tyre pressures, headed back out and it was perfect! Managed to get a couple of runs in with the new found set up (after spending all day swapping things). First in the que for the next run and get told theres no more runs due to the flood lights not being able to be on.

All in all,a very good day once the car was sorted, still need ALOT of practice, but that sadly wont be till next year now.

Heres a short video of a few runs, mainly highlighting the better parts/runs of the day. Massive thank you to those who came and showed support, also big thanks to those who helped aka my mini Pit Crew :D

Following on from my previous update,i've gotten round to sorting out the front side lights. After going to the scrappy and getting 2 new bulb holders...they're for offset pin bulbs (581 bulb) and not straight pin (380/207). So i re-used the original bulb holders which were straight, luckily!

IMG_0010.jpg

IMG_0011.jpg

Dispite the front sidelights looking orange, they are a normal clear bulb

Back in October for the Drift Day i battery decided to go bang,so thought i'd get something made up to remind me of my first 'battle scar'

IMG_0012.jpg

Also to compliment the new tow hooks,i got some stickers

Tiny update....

Last sunday went over to a mates to start prepping the hard top ready for painting. Heres a before and after, those who had seen the hard top in person will know how bad the paint is/was

2011-12-12113907.jpg

2011-12-12113933.jpg

2011-12-12113922.jpg

Also won a bargain on Ebay,a Stainless Steel exhaust which includes downpipe, decat, centre section and backbox for just £135!

2011-12-14133933.jpg

The boys in the Exhaust bay at work had a go at fitting it today but where the 3 bolt flange is on manifold/downpipe join 1 bolt has snapped and the other 2 wont move (he said its a 10mm fine thread). Which means manifold needs to be dropped for the bolts to be drilled out and probably re-threaded. Making sure the studs on the engine block dont snap in the process.

So done a quick search on my phone and can get a 4-2-1 stainless manifold for approx £120! Happy Days! So gonna save my pennies and get a stainless manifold and get the whole lot fitted in one go.

After the drift day in Nov i noticed a couple of wheel nuts were difficult to remove. Had a look and one of the studs has stripped its thread and another one was almost on its way out aswell. So a purchase of 2 wheel studs from mx5parts was made and they arrived next day. So thats another thing on my to-do list!

Ive been looking for a spare one for almost 2 years and nowhere in the uk sell them if I was to get one it'd have to be from the u.s and they're around £100 each without postage and taxes on top

Whaat! I just sold a full set on eBay for silly money, all centre caps and good tyres lol!

Dude I never knew you had an 5 too, i love mine :)

My stainless 4-2-1 Manifold arrived yesterday:

Popped down to H&S today to get the exhaust system fitted. Was gonna tackle it myself at home, but it was gonna be much easier with a ramp.

4-2-1 Manifold fitted:

2011-12-23162350.jpg

2011-12-23161456.jpg

We then came across a problem! The manifold is a different manufacturer to the rest of the exhaust system. Which meant the de-cat pipe was far too long (approx 160mm too long). So we fitted the rest of the system and came back to it. Mike then measured and cut the de-cat making sure it all lined up then re-welded the flange. Jobs a good 'un!
