Help please - Micra '03 auto gear lever sticking

Would really appreciate help if anybody knows the answer to this...

We're about to buy an '03 reg K12 Micra. The automatic gear lever button gets stuck in Park position - you can't press it in and move the stick into Drive (yes, foot is on the brake).
BUT it does work if you move the whole gear stick to the left a bit and then press in the button...there's a bit of movement in the stick which allows this to happen.

All other movements work fine eg back into Park, Drive to Reverse etc.

Does anybody know what causes this, and if it's a serious issue?

I have no idea if it's serious but if you are not happy don't buy it, there's plenty more out there.
