Help from Sweden (K10)

Hi,

Bought my Micra 1.2 SLX a year ago for my wife mainly beacuse of the cars excellent mileage, but the car is really fun to drive as well and not as cheesy and cheap looking as other older "minicars"

But ever since I bought the car it has been acting weird when driving at low speeds .. full throttle is usually no problem.
When driving 50Km/h in third gear and accelerating it feels as if the engine doesnt recieve any fuel, it feels really slow and sometimes stutters, but when hitting about 4000 RPM the engine runs normal again until I shift..

I was confident that the carb was the problem, so I ordered a used carb and replaced it today, but the problem remains, exactly as before.

Maybe the issue isnt fuel related as I am thinking?, could always start with replacing the fuel filter, but I am not sure where to locate it

I have changed oil and oil filter every 10000 Km.s and replaced the plugs and airfilter when I bought the car.

The ignition cables look fine at least, but maybe they are the problem anyway?

Greatful for any kind of tip or help.

Best regards.

Hello Johan and welcome to forum!

Fuel filter is in the backside of the engine. You can follow the incoming line of fuel from carburator and you will find a white plastic box which is the filter.

I also recommend that you change the ignition cabels, because I had problems with them with my -87 Micra. After I changed them, I haven't had any problems at all :)

good advice that! it may also be worth checking the condition of the spark plugs and distrubutor cap, spray some WD40 in the dissy cap this can sometime help :D esp as the weather is getting colder

Keep it on topic!

Definitly check the distributer cap. Ensure its sealed / secure to the car. Mine had a slight gap recently which caused dampness to get inside and caused major problems. Also spraying WD40 inside as suggested is a good idea.

I doubt it would be the fuel filter at fault, as your car would have problems at all RPM, not just below 4000.

Yes as always a great mistake worldwide, that Sweden is covered in snow :)

And I am also pretty confident that the filter isnt the issue here, but it sure could need replacing anyway.

I have ordered a Ignition cable kit as well as new plugs, a distributor cap and rotor, hopefully this will solve my problem.

What about all those vaccum hoses?, Are there any schematics over them?
Maybe some previous owner replaced all of them as I did but misplaced one or two hoses.. could that be causing my issues?

the vaccumm is disconnected or damaged could indeed casue problems at low revs including stalling and low tickover. as for the vacumm pipes layout your best to get a haynes manual to help you there. but on the models without the cat tha vacumm is so simple it cant really be done wrong

Problem is, my K10 has cat

On the other hand I borrowed all of the K10 technical books and instructions (a lot!) from the workshop manager at the Nissan dealership next door, will try to spend some time with those books tonight and see if I can find something useful..

in that case the vacum system is much more complex to a silly extent good luck... im sure you will figure it out once you get your head round it its simple just looks complex at first

I've heard bad things about Bosch products, however, lets hope they work for you!

So it has come to this, parts did - no difference what so ever, issue still remains, so I think I can rule out an ignition related problem. :(

I have noticed that the car runs great when cold, but it gets worse when it gets up to working temp.

I also looked into the carb with a flashlight when revving, and I could se the small throttle valve opening (of course, its wire operated) but even when revving real high, the other bigger throttle valve did not open, is this normal?
Maybe both valves are open only when there is resistance on the engine? (whilst driving)
And I have checked the diaphragm controlling the bigger throttle valve, and it is working,..

*sigh*

i think on reading all your messages that the problem is the fuel control valve in the carburettor. i had this problem a few months ago tried everything then found that this fuel control valve sticks when hot i replaced it (bit of a specialised job cause it quite hard) and it fixed it so see how u get on. otherwise u could try a scrappy and buy a new carburettor.

But I have already replaced my carb, and I get the exact same problem with the "new" carb.

Would be pretty unlikely that the "new" carb would have the exact same issue as my old one?

Btw, is the fuel control valve located in the bottom of the carb?

Hi, have alook at the Idle compensator. It's in the air filter housing. Take the air filter cover off, remove filter and listen for a hissing when car is running. The Idle compensators job is to break a contact. The hotter it gets the wider the gap. This weakens fuel making sure it dosn't run rich when hot. Or use a hairdryer to see if the contacts open.

Also check your fuel pump for delivery to the carb.

yep its located at the bottom you can tell wot it is cause theres rods that are connected to it also have u replaced the fuel filter yet

Partially solved my problem!

I simply unhooked the vaccum hose that controls the EGR valve, and now the car only hesitates half a second on low RPM.s , the problem remains, but is now hardly noticable.

I think my main problem lies elsewhere because when disengaging the EGR valve the engine gets more fuel on low RPM.s, and I think lack of fuel on low RPM.s is the main issue, but I do not know why.

BTW, the EGR valve (Exhaust Gas Return) is a feature that may only exist here in Sweden, it is in short a diaphragm controlling a valve that lets in exhaust gases inte the intake pipe to lower emissions..
Sweden has pretty tight emission regulations.

Please check your coil, run the car for 15 minutes and carefully touch the coil and external resistor, in case this part is to hot you have to change it.

cant be the problem I am afraid, even after driving hard for 30 minutes the coil doesnt get hot.

Sorry to drag up an old topic but I'm going to be a bit dim and ask, which bit is the external resisitor? Is it the small white box near the coil or is it the small cylinder mounted underneath (or is that the power transisitor)?

Here's a pic:

Could someone point out which is which? Thanks.

Hello everybody !

I just bay a K10 -87 and have exact same problem. Must be a 'Sweden Problem' i think. I'm working on the problem and would like to thank you all for a nice forum and i think it could help me a lot when fixing my car. I hope also to be able to help out if i can. Not used to Micra but a lot of other cars.
My english is real bad but i try my best.

Regards

Mike

Why? I have exactly the same problem. :(
When cold, the engine starts and runs very good, but when hot - it's almost a nightmare to drive it.
