Fuel filler cap locations

Hi

I have been wondering this for a while and cant find a definite answer.

Is there a rule or thumb or a pattern of what type/make/country a car is to what side the fuel filler cap is on as my march is on the passenger side, makes sense so you arn't bashing the drivers door on a petrol pump. But my brothers polo has it on the drivers side, and same with my mums BMW?

Any ideas anyone?

Cheers

Well I would of thought it would be due to what side of the road people drive on but in the uk the majority of stations accomodate for both sides so it may just be down to the design as my missus' c3 is on the passengers too and it's French!

if you look on your dash if the fuel gauge is on the left the filler cap will be on the left and same for if it is on the right
