Front Lights

Are they allowed to be different colours other than the standard yellowey white? :glance:

And is it illegal to have your water jets to clean your windscreen illuminated.. because I just did...

As far as I'm aware the windscreen washer lights are illegal (distraction to other drivers)
And I'm pretty certain Headlighs must be white or yellow

But don't take my 100% word for it!

unless there white, like headlights, i think there fine but im not 1005 so could look into that, you can get lights with tints in but again there are certain factors make em legal/illegal.....

Police especially dislike blue lights on the front of cars "impersonating a police vehicle" is something I've heard a couple of times from people with blue lights

Lights other than white on the front will cause you to be pulled over one day. Its a grey area regarding blue lights, as long as they do not flash then they are ok, but some Police officers will insist you turn them off/remove them, thats all they can do.

When I had a Honda Goldwing 1500 trike it had lots of lights on it and not once did I get pulled over. None of them were flashing.

Headlights however I believe must be white, dont think yellow is allowed anymore, but dont quote me on that.

ive got red led's and i havent been stopped yet, not saying i wont but ive had them on quite a while.

Yep and the only time you will ever get pulled is when the copper is in a bad mood!

I had red lights on the rear of my Escort, had them for ages. My Girlfriend got pulled over by a Police woman in a vey bad mood (probably hard up at night ;) ) She was told to remove them...Red on rear is 110% legal...her excuse was "It makes it hard to read the number plate"

If I was there at that time I would have told her to go to Specsavers...2 little red lights making it hard to read a number plate?!?! Better not have lights on at all lol

yer fair point ive got them on the front anyway, i just hope that if coppers do see them they cant be bothered to turn around and find me again ^^

Uh so thats why all the taxis drive around quite happily with the blue washer jets and not getting pulled!

i had white washer jets, non flashing and got pulled for them asked to remove them... isaid id do it the next morning as it was like 2.00am but didnt do it...

i got pulled again two days later and just ended up taking them off... not worth the potential of getting pulled over all the time...

they did say themselves that white should be ok, was a grey area in their mind but mine were bright and would just attract attention... cops were nice about it, it just meant i may get pulled over every so often having them check the car over.... not worth it imo...

i dont understand all this lights business...same with undercar stuff, now id never have either fitted to mine (a personal choice) but the object is that your car IS noticed, if anything youre saving pedestrians lives and if other drivers are distracted that much to dangerous levels by lights on the road, then surely they shouldnt be driving either at night or maybe even at all.

Its like telling pedestrians not to wear bright clothes incase it causes drivers to crash...

I had blue under car lights on my Mondeo and I have been past 3 Police cars with them on...Never got pulled over. Its a risk you take I suppose. But if they say its distracting other road users then maybe they should stop all these lights on Roadworks when traveling at night...they distract you more lol

It depends on the area, I know where I live the police have more important things to do.
It's the areas with low crime rates where they get bored that you'll get pulled

chap doin me bike MOT said your allowed yellow lights as they are what you get on lorries etc to illuminate oversized vehicles. Was for a bike though so dont quote me!

erm, from what i can determine talkin to my police pals (may not be 100%), static, none flashing lights are legal, within the confines of brightness, however the underglow neons are illegal as they 'give an illusion of a wider vehicle'

as far as i'm concerned if i was pulled for having said lights on my vehicle i would tell them to pull every lorry they saw with any of such lights on and demand they be removed

just asked, appropriate colours (red white and orange) are allowed to be used as 'outline markers' to display the dimensions or increase awareness of yourself.

however in terms of blue neon lights the police argue their vehicles are the only ones allowed to have them on their vehicles or it would be "impersonating a police vehicle" (as ollie240585 rightly said)...

... i'll be asking a traffic bobby i know personally tomorrow and i'll get the hard facts for you all

This was from http://www.constella.co.uk/lightlaw/thelightlaw.htm and is pretty straight forward and understandable.

The law on under car Lighting:

The 1989 Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations cover the whole issue of vehicle lighting. In short, the regulations state that there should only be certain light emissions that apply to certain external areas of a car. For example it states that constant light beams must be clear at the front of a road vehicle (with the exception of the indicators) and red at the rear (Again with the exception of the indicators).
Blue is also associated with emergency vehicles and is therefore illegal for use on the public highway. But is fine for display use on private land.
Extreme caution should be used if displaying your glow on a public high way - it is illegal if a bulb is visible. But if your lighting kit is fitted correctly you do not have a problem.
As the law stands, colours other than blue are technically legal for use on the public highway, as long only a glow is visible and not the actual bulb itself. Our advice would be to use your common sense on the issue and make informed decisions from your own experience and others around you. It is up to police discretion how far they will act in each instance, so if in doubt turn it off!
Just use your common sense and you should be fine if you have led washer jets don't have red ones facing forward or red side light bulbs as the police tend to not like this and it may result in you getting handed a £30 fine.
So some key points:
Only glows no visible bulbs or tubes
Blue lamps are not permitted on the public roads
forward facing red led washer jets are a no go
If you have moved your number plate make sure it is lit

Right Time To Clear a Few Things Up Then

Red washer jets at the front of vehicles are illegal because because it will put off oncoming drivers. Only white LED washer jets s you should be definately be able to get away from, blue washer jets you'll be lucky getting away with them.

As for H4 driving lamps and any other driving lamps on any car have to be with a white light colour spectrum, I have added two pictures, the bigger picture is the colour spectrum what is different kinds of light output, the smaller picture shows you what is defined as white light by ECE Reg 37, the small triangle bit ignore that's for amber light (Indicator bulbs).

If you still don't understand contact me via MIcramail and I'll do my best to give a better idea.

All bulbs that are supplied by Ring and Halfords Packed fall with the white light spectrum, even the sportz blue lamps but the only problem with them is that they are high wattage bulbs and not e'marked.
