Electrical Problem- Advice Appreciated!

Hi Folks,

I have a problem with my micra- when I pull the keys out of the ignition, the ignition lights come on  and the battery is draining when not in use.

I had a similar fault on my old classic escort, which was the regulator causing the exact same fault. Does anyone think it could be the same thing?

Also just to point out, since having a new windscreen fitted, it leaks in the corners letting in wet, and cos the weather is so poor I have had no time to seal it up yet. Does anyone think damp could be causing a short inside the cabin? The water seeps in at the bottom left and right hand corners of the screen.

Any help appreciated :)

Cheers, Dan

water may have leaked onto the fuse box where there is a permanent live feed. this may have shorted causing constant drain of power?? try pulling fuses one by one will you find the drain :)

yap bro...check ur fuses 1st.....may be what Courior say right! if after u check ur fuses is ok....may be have shorted of power ur battery! u must check "alternator" may be ur "alternator not run for recharge ur battery....just i guess!fwn

If this hapens ONLY after the key is pulled out then suspect the ignition barrel contacts....

I doubt that there is any water in your ignition contacts...i think dripping water from the windscreen would have to go up-hill to get to the contacts

.....even if water got into your fusebox...I dont reccon water would drain the battery so soon...water is a few hundred k Ohms at a centimetre distance and the voltage is only 12 Volts....

I would suggest in this case to take off the steering column cowel and inspect / clean the electrical cntacts on the left side of the barrel

I havent tinkered here myself so I dont know what the practicallities are

Excellent stuff, many thanks for the replies folks :)

I'll have a poke around once the windscreen is sealed and the interior is dried out.

Sammo> the car was laid up for about a week in this situation before it wouldnt start, so the small drain over a long time could have drained it. The whole interior of the car is damp, so that cant be helping either.

Worst case scenario I have a spare alternator which I can try if drying out the interior electrics doesnt do the job.

Thanks again people, I hope to get somewhere with it this weekend- i'll keep you posted on any progress if I get the weather :k10:

UPDATE!

I slung the battery on charge and sealed up the windscreen at weekend, fired it up and let it run with the heater on full blast for half an hour.

All seems OK now so far, it was VERY damp after it had stood for a week, but I'm yet to use the car regularly to make sure its 100%.

Cheers for the advice peeps :)
