Driving with the hatch open?

So, I can carry my bike with the rear seats folded, but it sticks out the back. The hatch stays open about a foot, tied down with a bungee around the wiper post and bike handlebar. I think (hope) that with the front windows open a few inches I'm safe from exhaust fumes coming in. Any thoughts? Is there a better way to carry my heavy eMTB?

I mean you see it all of the time so I don't see why not as long as its secure and you can plainly see the numberplate

I guess removing the bike wheel or 2 might gain you some space.

Other then that I would say bike rack but I imagine electric ones weigh a bit more then a bog standard bike and cost a lot more if it breaks the rack as I don't know what they are rated too

I can just imagine bike, rack and the hatch itself left lying in the road behind me. The bike weighs 50 lbs or so.
