Carb Change

Hiya,
Im a mini Man, and have worked With HS carbs, and was wondering if the Micra 1.0 K10 will take an HS4 or HS2 Carb or even twin carbs!!:grinning:
Is it an easy swap and is there any reliability increase or performance increase

hi mate,

Well im running twin 36 DCNF webers on my 1.0L and its a rocket :p

the only reliablilty issue that there is, is the gearbox and clutch....

But mine havent gone yet :) (touches a very big piece of wood)

the performance increase is around 20-30bhp, but putting a 4-2-1 exhuast manifold does help too ;)

Mine were an easy swap as they were designed by a company and was made just for this MA10 engine.

hope this helps (Y)

The HS don't have all the whistles & bells that modern carbs do (eg autochoke and idle compensators for electrical load or temperature etc)

But I'm also looking into a HS mod, but I definately wont be using any of the HS compatibe manifolds from the likes of the mini nor others though.....mine will be fully custom (and fairly wacky too...lol)....I am armed with the carb / carbs but the manifold is still on the drawing board / research stage

Theres a couple of other chaps on here have SUs fitted...one is the more modern & compact HIF I think...another is working on a single HS.

IMO the reliabillity of the HS carbs have to be better than most fixed choke types since there are so few moving parts in comparrison....

..performance wont be as 'punchy' as the fixed choke types though but the SU's should be easier to tune over rpm & load than fixed choke because the carb venturi is self regulating.....thats not to say it will be 'quick' to tune since there are hundredds of needles and only one or two of these hundreds of needles will be 'best tuned' for your particular setup

...BUT when you have found the right one youre there...and this will give a performance increase.....across the RPM & load range

have you had the car on a rolling road?

No, but its pretty obvious with a halfed 0-60....

and considering i can overtake and keep going away from a mini that is running at 75bhp......

standard is 55 at tops for a micra 1.0l so that at least 25bhp just from the crabs!

yeah and minis are lighter, half way through fitting a su 1 3/4 with head work skimmed, ported, 3 angle valves, 4-1 exhaust manifold straight exhaust system and denso platinuim plugs.
Will be having a mini speacialists to set it up and rolling roaded in june, possibly with a mad cam.

Had it running breifly but the inlet manifold didn't sela on the head quite properly and pumped a small amount of water into the cylinders, didn't do any damage but stripped down anyway.

Hey ya cheers guys,
THe HS carbs Both SU and HIF, are brilliant for reliability and Tunability.
i think 1 3/4 HIF 44\HS SU6 is a little excssive.
i Would say for a 1 or 1.2 1 1/2 HS SU 4 or HIF 38 is adequate.
Anyone looking for performance Twin HS2's are yiur best bet.
Whipit, Is that a RAM pipe!!!
Ar you gonna use the Mini Air filter and Box or going for a pankake?

have you had the car on a rolling road?

the German documentation that came with the carbs quoted a 20ps power gain which works about 19bhp this was on a standard ma10 setup, with a 4-2-1 in as well it worked out about a 25-27hp gain b my calulations

luckily i speak and read German which was quite handy when i fitted them to the car :p

Yeah thats a ram pipe and a ITG sock filter just pushes on over that, no air box or pancake. That 4-1 manifold is great and yes i have been looking into twin SU's and will have a manifold tigged up later on in the year once i understand the carbs a bit more.
