Advise on Fault Codes that cause the PS light to come.

Help. The dreaded PS light came on in my daughter’s beloved 2004 Nissan Micra. We desperately need some advise. We had the AA out who have tried to reset the faulty codes C1606 and C1608 but no luck. We have been quoted around £1300 for a new Steering Column by Nissan but that doesn’t seem worth it and she can’t afford it being 21 and in her last year of Uni ( she has worked all her holidays for this car). We understand that a refurbished Steering Column need to brought back to “virgin” state and than set with the cars personal codes but this doesn’t always work especially as her car is a “ key-less” model and they often trigger the final codes that will immobilise the whole car within a few weeks of the “new” Steering Column being fitted. Is this true or is there something we can do as we have recently put new tyres, spark plugs a new drive belt and had work done on the back rear bearing. So it is well maintained and she loves driving it. I have not been able to find a garage that is confident in taking on this work. Please what can we do?
