Rust in peace Mum's Micra :(

My Mum rang me up about 2 hours ago saying she needed a lift home as she'd just crashed the Micra. Turned up, and...

Oh dear

The road wasn't much wider than the tractor, it was a blind corner, and it had no escort or anything. Not a scratch to the tractor but the Micra is dead. I had to reverse it off the road and onto the field and it didn't sound happy, needed loads of revs. Managed to get it towed home, so we'll have to sort it out in the morning.

Not totally, it's going to be a 50/50 at best as that tractor had every right to be driving on that road, and it's not too wide to need an escort aparrently. But in the rain on a blind bend on a narrow road, you can't stop quick even from doing 20mph.

I think it'll have to be. If so, I'm having some bits. I'd quite like the wheels as they are 14s rather than my 13s but she might not appreciate me ripping it apart just yet

Looks repairable, hows it drive currently and what year is it, phase one facelift?

agreed, depending on the condition of the chassis legs, that will be repairable.

but still sucks, why does crap like that have to happen?

Its W reg, 1998, so first facelift. The radiator is almost horizontal, lying pretty much on top of the rocker cover. Would be some repair job TBH. We'll see what the bloke says when he looks it over. Only trouble is, if he says it's a write off would I still be able to get bits off of it or would they take it away?

More pictures of the actual tractor position in a minute

you will probably have to change:

upper and lower cross members
bonnet
bumper
radiator
engine? mainfold maybe
probably washer fluid bottle
headlights
crash panel
wings

that should be about it, it sounds alot but its not really.

if you claim on the insurance they take the car, if you rob any bits off before they take it and they don't notice then you will get away with that.

it will be a write off because insurance companies don't think micras are worth anything, you would probably not do any good claiming on the insurance as it would cost more in lost NCB and hire insurance premiums than the amount of money they give you.

best thing to do is to leave the insurance out of it, as the tractor doesn't need fixing, buy a new car, and see if you can either repair and sell the car, or just give it to me :D

Yeah if we had the time or money to fix it we probably would, but we also need a new car asap. If the insurance company will pay out enough to get another Micra it would make things easier at the moment.

If anyone wants to buy it we could probably buy it back from the insurer to sell...!? lol

sure well problem is that the insurance will either pay out, but you will also have to pay an excess and loose any no claims bonuses, and that will give you the market value of the car which could be something like £900 you have to work out if it is worth loosing the no claims and getting higher premiums to get that money. you could be better off spending about £300 and get an older style micra for now, if you just need a car and then try and save up.

if you keep the car then the insurance will not pay out, so it depends again if it is worth it to you to get the money from the insurance or not.

insurance is a #####

Most importantly is your mum ok? I know it can be pretty daunting crashing your car, and when faced with a huge tractor it can be even more terrifying.

Makrakin08 - If I can get the wheels off without the insurers noticing I might be selling the 13s!

Rob - Yeah she's fine. Bit shaken up and some minor whiplash.

No the airbag didn't go off.

I'd be worried about voiding my mum's insurance by swapping the wheels though... just incase they did know they weren't the originals

trust me insurance companies are really dumb, they don't really care about things like that.

they didn't notice that my car didn't have side repeaters in the wings or that the front grill and bumper were both open.

Can't convince my dad unfortunately  although theres nothing in the policy about declaring steelie changes, just alloys.

Will probably tow it up to the garage today and try and persuade the insurer to come and look at it there rather than at their own place. Might stand more of a chance there.

Well the insurance has offered £1500 thank you very much :D lol. only worth £1180 in a showroom apparently, so that'll do nicely.

Well they've just changed their mind without even seeing it, and now reckon it's repairable. Will have to wait and see. :glare:

thats a bit random, did you get something offical for that figure? like a letter or something? or was it over the phone?

give the car to me :D i will make it look unrepairable and then repair it ;)
