I had the same issue but it was due to the lever that the cable moves becoming stiff so the tension was causing it to spring off it’s holding lug. I couldn’t see how to oil or loosen the lever so had to araldite a washer over the end of the lug to stop the cable springing off due to the tension...

Just fixed this on my 2012 K13 (with manual temperature controls, not aircon equipped). Remove the radio air vent facia - pulls off with a little gentle persuasion. Remove and disconnect radio - 4 obvious screws and 3 electric cables - watch out as 2 retaining lugs from the radio use the lower...
