Overheating (non-cooling system related)

Looks like my car woes aren't over.

Brief history:
Broke down in December, been standing idle for 6 months
Replaced fuel filter/air filter
Replaced ECU
Replaced Fuse
Replaced distributor

I got it started finally last week, and had it idled for 45 minutes. No issues, wanted to just let it run since it hadn't in a while, was giving it some gas and keeping it at a high idle for a while just to blow out the cobwebs, seemed to have no issues (except headlights and tail lights which I'm sorting now today). However, just done the first run in it since I fixed it, went to mcdonalds, it's around a 3 mile journey all under 35 mph, middle of the day on a Wednesday so no traffic, did a few laps of the street I live on first just to make sure it wasn't going to cut out on me.

So I drive 3 miles, idle going through the drive-through, never had issues before with this car and it wasn't hot when it broke down in December it just cut out. Could smell it getting hot when I opened the window to talk into the box thing, pulled up, ate my big mac, got out to go in for a slash and as I walked past the front I put my hand on the bonnet and burnt my hand. Opened the bonnet and even the airbox was warm, it hasn't nudged up on the temperature gauge inside the car but the thing was definitely hot. Touched the radiator and it was hot, and the fan was running. So I'm pretty sure it's nothing to do with coolant, had plenty coolant in it, thermostat must be operating if the rad was warm, the heatercore inside the car works. Drove it home again, noticed it was slightly higher on the temp gauge than the middle, I have a piece of tape on there from when I did a coolant flush and I'd estimate it was maybe 3mm higher up than the exact middle. When I got home, the bonnet was cool again, the airbox was cool again, but the head of the engine, the wires, the distributor, everything else still really warm. Warmer than you'd expect for the top end of the engine anyway.

Anyone have any ideas? What sort of issues could 6 months standing still cause as far as overheating when it previously didn't? Does the ECU need time to get the fuel mixture right again?

No AC, i've driven it twice since and while it's still getting warm to the touch the needle isn't going off the middle any more

I'm starting to think it may have just been the brakes binding a slight bit the first time I used it putting the engine under higher load than usual, wish I had thought to touch the wheels at the time so I'd know for sure. They didn't feel like they were scraping but then I hadn't driven a car for a while and so I probably wouldn't have been able to tell.
