Andy_S Micra SR20 - Done Properly

Right so that spring then is putting force on diaphragm towards the boost pipe at top. If I put a weaker spring in mine I can reduce the boost levels. Can I not adjust anything for now?

Where would I get springs from? How would I know what would fit?

yes, the spring is pulling the rod fully back, and the boost pushes the rod outwards, the extra spring assists the boost pressure in pushing the rod outwards.
you can use some scales to measure how strong a spring you need

What try an pull the rod out with luggage scales on the end and me holding the other trying to pull apart from each other. Like this? Well same principle. Except person in middle is actuator and the two pulling are my hands haha

What are the metal things that sit onto of valve springs under rocker arm??

God knows. Basically got valve spring and metal battery size sits in middle one facing up and the other valve one faves down. See pic above. The rocker arm is then placed ontop of it

Sure you don't mean hydraulic lifters?

That engine is not looking very well. I'd seriously just replace it with another one.

Those are shims. One is keyed one is just a flat tablet shape. Get them on the wrong way round and they snap, rockers then fall off and all hell can break loose. Still think your on a hiding to nothing long term with this - sorry to say.

is that why my cam snapped?

i prob am and ive got spare engine and gearbox in almera but want to see if i can salvage this tbh. Ive bought a cam anyhow should be here friday and just need two shims now but dunno what size they are and what order they go in!

It doesn't matter, it has hydraulic lifters. But you need to make sure you get them right, you can tell by looking closely.

The variances are tiny. Nothing like that at all. You need to read/get the sr20 service manual.

Gonna try this repair over weekend and if it blows again ill be swapping engines over and getting the Ecu to Ed and when it's fitted back in ill be driving it down to Ed for fine tuning and dyno!! It will prob be very soon this though haha!! Worth a go though trying to fix it

Just adding my two penneths worth, seen these on MCM vid, i have no idea at all if they are worth it or work, but seem to do a job on SR20DET lumps. Please shoot me down if i have it wrong, just adding my bit, go to 2:42 maybe they will help, i dont know, but thought i would try :)

Back up and running perfectly again thanks to previous owner who came from stoke to repair it! Had full service too! New spark plugs, new oil flush then drained and new oil filter then proper oil in

No bent valves. We had some spares just incase.

They have had this setup in for 6 years no problems. Been in a Almera, a primera and this micra.

Cam went due to shims being fitted in wrong sides. The rocker arms have thinner bits on one side so it sits perfectly. When we fitted ours we basically forced the rocker in the shim causin it to crack and come off and hit cam and snap it! Replaced rocker arms, few shims and the whole cam. Had to retime it all too

They were fantastic with their help and clearly not sold me the car an fobbed me off. That deserves respect in my eyes!

Everything fitted back together and he made sure it ran fine, it boosted fine etc.

We didn't turn turbo down though. Apparently he said we don't need to as it can withstand it

Ill be taking it to them to get clutch changed next month.

From now on ill start her up. Sit in her for 10 mins with iPad or phone and play some games/surf the net then drive her slowly then I can open her up :). Same again when stopping to turn her off.

Btw when we drained the first oil it was like piss!! I had some spare oil so we poured that in with sump plug out so we saw that just going straight through. Put sump plug in. Filled back up with castrol gtx. Turned her over. Ran her for 10 mins then dropped that. Changed oil filter and put Fuchs race pro s oil in (recommended by opie oils) and ran her for 10 mins upto temp. Checked everything over. Took her out up and down the street nicely then but more briskly then a bit more to see how it boosts. They did say once warmed I could hard drive it but I wasn't taking any risks lol.

Just need to sort the new drivers headlight out as its pointin down! And fit the Almera passenger seat again for MOT time

Mot hopefully at weekend an will get some videos made from inside the car and outside in 3D 1080p (for the geeks like me haha)

I think the trick is to not repeat the same mistake again... eg poor ignition & fuel management. I am on the road to fix this one myself.

Like I said he had it running for 6 years no problem in diff cars like it is. So think the ignition is sorted etc. will see anyway. Just happy again.

praps SR20,s are less det prone ? and it has low comp pistons fitted according to the "for sale" advert eh
Well ed says they are good for turbos and u don't need to lower compression with a map.

but it does have pulsar pistons, conrods 200sx injectors (not skyline as i thought) as he said he basically bought a pulsar, stripped it for parts and put engine parts in this engine.

I would say its normal wear and tear anyway

Mot time in morning. I've been over everything. Checked all lights work etc. had it on tick over for over a hour today and never missed a beat. Took it out around the estate nice and slowly going through the gears

Also got seat brackets back and fitted to bucket seats which will be fitted over weekend
