the ground goes to the same nut my radio ground goes to (see black wire below), the 12V constant i had it hooked up to was spliced from the radio Head Unit's constant 12V (yellow lead on the ISO adapter)

turns out that goes to the "interior lights" fuse.
replacing the affected fuse fixed it:D
