I was nearly in tears yesterday as I dropped my D reg Colette off at the scrapyard... Put 40K on it in just under two years and it finally had too much wrong with it for me to put right (not enough spare time or cash). Suspension, rear bearings, brakes, starting/idle problems, choke issues etc...

Remember to set the gap on the points with a tacho if you have one should you have to remove them.

the rumbling sounds a lot like what I had with mine recently. Just needed a points and condenser change. Apparently need regular replacement (6k mi or so) so this could be at the root of your problems if everything points to dizzy. Bit fiddly to do yourself and ignition timing will...

Good idea. Not blatant, no. More like an internal mechanical rattle as though it were in the engine when accelerating. You get so used to the sound of your own car dont you... It used to do this sound a while ago but only when I really put my foot down to climb a hill in too high a gear...

Yeah, when I drive conservatively it doesn't seem to be heard much, only really when I'm pulling away, accellerating or putting my foot down.

OK cool, I'll try and get a new exhaust from a scrappy.. Any ideas on the rattle? H

Right, Sammo: I have no idea how to check the timing stuff that you mentioned, but just by visually checking, they look OK... Next though, my number 3 spark plug is much more soiled than the others (all done under 2k miles), there is a little oil on the threads and most of the cone is black...

Micra110: No I didnt, good point, will change points, rotor arm and condenser soon. richj: The battery is OK I think, it is under 2 years old and it doesn't high idle much. Cheers or the ideas, it took 5 goes this morning! H

Hi, No petrol smell or smoke and I replaced the fuel filter recently! I get an occaisional misfire on one cylinder when accelerating slowly uphill in 2nd/3rd at all engine temperatures, could this be linked? H

Right, from cold with no gas, it takes a lot of sustained cranking to get it going and even then it rumbles and farts before eventually idling normally after i tap the gas pedal. It is a similar story with the pedal slightly pressed, it even cuts out as well like this. Any clues? H
