K12 power steering fault

Hi I'm new to the forum, I recently purchased a k12 Micra for my girlfriend..... unfortunately not long after purchase the PS light has come on and she lost power steering. How do I resolve this problem please? Thanks.

Got the dreaded PS warning up and loss of power steering. Contacted NISSAN, they cant even see me for at least two weeks and want £130 just to run a diagnostic. Is there any way out of this? My K12 is otherwise in great condition and too good for the scrapyard.

Can anyone help?

Richard

I spent 650 quid fixing mine recently, you will probably need a new steering column.

Had the same defect recently. Car is way too good to scrap so I elected to have it fixed; it needed a new steering column. The issue stems around the steering ECU which is part of and not separable from the steering column motor unit. The internal chip apparently fails and thus cannot tell your car that the steering is ok and armed on start up.

My repair cost £650 which included fitting and a lifetime guarantee. I could have purchased just the steering column part but that was around £400, hence I elected to go for the whole job.

Snag for me was that I had to drive the car 130 miles to the repair location and the steering, without power, was absurdly difficult!

Driving back home was a dream........

Look for a power steering specialist in your area, I don't think this is a routine garage task. I got mine fixed in Bristol.

Good luck

Perhaps I was 'ripped off' but very pleased with the job they did; it took six hours and involved a complete check of the rack, balljoints and front suspension. They were even polite which is a bit rare these days.

Huttjob, how much would a tested unit cost from you, and what sort of guarantee would it come with? Also, would I have had to get the unit reprogrammed after fitting it?

Kind regards
Richard

Nothing! I have checked so many without charging anything.

I worked for TRW and I bet I know more then the people you went to on these units as I worked on them for 10 years, visited Nissan every week and discussed the warranty for these units, Tested Nissan MIcra round test tracks for weeks on end and have every bit of knowledge about these units.

not getting into a pissing contest, as long as your happy but id put money on that your unit has not been correctly configured. If you want it checked then let me know.

A very kind offer thank you. I don't doubt your expertise, that was not my intention at all. Birmingham was just out of my reach.

I have no idea whether the configuration is adequate, all I do know is that the steering now operates flawlessly. The place I went to was not the prettiest but absolutely ram packed with literally thousands of racks, steering columns etc etc; it was just what they specialised in. The guy who did the job described the details to me in advance and it all made perfect sense. My own background is in Marine Engineering so I understood the process but lacked the tools and specific expertise to do it myself.

So if you have a ship you need fixing, I am your man.........

Kind regards
Richard

The thing you need to worry about is that TRW never released the know how. I even have a local Nissan dealership ring me when they get issues with a TRW K12 EPS.

The problem you have is they probably used an NVM from a different unit and if you read the post I wrote about this and happy them that’s all that matters.

have a look at ;

Hi huttojb

My daughter recently purchased an 06 Micra (1.4, auto) which immediately (the week we got it) had the PS light issue. Initially, turing the ignition off and on again fixed it, but the garage we purchased it from said it would likely stop resetting and to bring it back when it did. Well, as expected, a couple of weeks later - no PS at all.

The garage are fitting a second hand unit tomorrow (free of charge) and I'm fully expecting it to not work after reading all these threads, due to the electronics so I wondered if you might be able to help? We're in Derby.

The car has only done 38k miles and aside from this (massive) problem, the car is pretty darn perfect so I'm loathed to get a refund and have to find another car (garage have said if the 2nd hand unit doesn't fix it, they'll give us a refund on the car). Granted, that might be our best option, but after reading all your threads, might be able to give it one last go?

I can't private message yet as I've only just registered on here, but would be good to hear from you.

Thanks, rebecca
