Aeris Build Log

Welcome to Aeris' build log!

So first of all, I would like to introduce you all to Aeris, my 2002 K11 Micra Tempest! (Also know as Aerith, anyone that played FF7 in the 90s will get the nod!)

64547

She is my first ever Micra, she currently has around 48010 miles on her and is sporting countless scratches and dings from the last elderly gentleman owner (Thanks for that pal...) but on the plus side, she is fairly rust free with immaculate sills.

She does have some rust under the scuttle panel which has now been treated, a leaking fuel filler neck which I have just replaced myself, a broken return spring, squeaky suspension and the previous owner hacked at the stereo wiring which made installing my filp out headunit a real treat, oh yeah she also has a windscreen leak.

Overall though she is a lovely car to drive with a nearly faultless MOT history bar the old tyres she has clearly had on for a few years!

I am not looking to go mad with her modification-wise, mostly restoring the previous owner's contributions to the car, maintenance work and some cosmetic pieces to make it my own!

Work Planned :
  1. Sand down, prime and repaint the steel wheels gloss black.
  2. STICKERS! Because racecar.
  3. Gear Stick Return Spring.
  4. Paintwork repair all round.
  5. Preventative Rust treatment.
  6. Speaker Upgrade (Love my music!).
  7. Electric window conversion?
  8. Swap dash for one with a rev counter?
  9. Locking Wheel Nuts.
  10. Parking Sensor Install.
  11. A good bloody wash once the leaks have been fully fixed!
  12. Re-black Trims.
  13. ???
Work Completed :
  1. Passenger footwell leak caused by scuttle panel.
  2. Replaced old stereo with new touch-screen flip out headunit.
  3. Replaced Fuel Filler neck with brand new part and hose clamps.
  4. Treated rust found under scuttle panel

Updates due soon!

Please provide advice if you have any!

Silver , should be called sephiroth :D have fun and welcome

One in the hand, one in the bag bubblin', look at the cash, look at the cash coming in.

Speaker/stereo wise well stock speakers are hard to beat without running a amp,
OEM rear parcel shelf speaker and a pillar tweeters are a straight fit and one the best audio modes
I run JVC stereos due to Thier audio, controls and setup (setup is what makes the different) and I run a sub aswell

The return spring can just rebend the end and rehook it (did afew )
Rust wise best strip the sills and other such areas run some rust treatment, redoxide , paint then waxoil, remove the fuel filler cover (they hold dirt) rear arches are some the worse for corrosion and , DONT underseal , that creates problems
Guessing it's got a sunroof , may want to do the sunroof drains , I run them out the rear vents and fronts out the sills or could drill a hole and feed then behind the wing

My original speakers rattle a lot at higher volume so they might be loose or even blown, the tweeter and parcel shelf swap could be a fun little job if I do swap the door speakers out. Breakers for the bits?

The headunit I have is a flip out touch sceen Ripspeed one from Halfords I bought over 7 years ago and it's still going strong so I'm sticking with that, it's a pretty solid unit with an EQ and stuff so should be okay for what I want.

I have heard the return spring is an easy job, like you say, I did try to have a look but I think there is a heat shield under it?

Good advice on the rust work and fuel filler neck cover, it was an absolute state when I pulled it off, I have cable tied mine back on so I can remove it easier when ever I wash the car to prevent a build up of dirt or rust.

Top stuff, thanks man!

Also what sub have you good? I don't want to take up too much room in the boot.

Sounds either it's the speakers are look or the stereo is destorting, and I mean by set in abit more the just basic eq, I going thought all the setting , mine got multiple bass boost, loud, then eq ,plus custom then frequencys , but also the stereo is clean and solid though , it's why I stick to JVC due to Thier sound quality and options or. Sound and spec ,

And my sub is a auna twin 10inch sub 250w ,

And for a pair of tweets and trims and shelf speakers are easy to get only cost £15 for each (saying how much cause there's been some chancers asking £40+ for them )

Welcome! Nice car, and good clear plans.

Bilt Hamber products for all your anti-corrosion needs - both preventative and restorative.

So it's been a while! I carried out a driveway service today minus actually replacing any fluids or parts, just to check the overall condition of Aeris and to see where she is at mechanically!

She is due all the usual... Spark plugs, anti-freeze, air filter, brake fluid, fuel filter is a few thousand miles off but it's worth doing now to be honest, new oil and oil filter. I only have records of services up until 32k miles and I am now at 51K (Brought her at 48K) so I'm going to say that she is due everything to be on the safe side, (She has always had major services according to records to be fair but there is definitely a gap in her history)

For anyone's records (As per Haynes Pro's instructions):
Air Filter - Due every 36,000 miles / 48 months.
Anti-Freeze - Due first change at 54,000 miles / 60 months and then every 36,000 miles / 24 months after that.
Automatic Transmission Fluid - Due every 18,000 miles / 24 months.
Brake Fluid - Due every 18,000 miles / 24 months.
Engine Oil - Due every 9,000 miles / 12 months.
Pollen Filter - Due every 18,000 miles / 24 months.
Fuel Filter - Due every 54,000 miles / 72 months.
Oil Filter - Due every 9,000 miles / 12 months.
Spark Plugs - Due every 18,000 miles / 24 months.

So I'll now be gathering up all the necessary parts to do all the work I want to do! In terms of bodywork condition, she is pretty rust free apart from the treated metalwork from the leak incident... a few minor spots of surface rust but with proper maintenance these shouldn't cause me any problems. Sills are still looking nice which is a plus!

I didn't get the chance to measure my discs and pads due to the weather this time but a visual inspection shows me that the pads will need doing in a few months, wear depending and the discs have a slight lip but I'll probably do both when the pads are due anyway.

Rear tyres are running 2mm across inner, mid and outer, fronts are on 3mm across the board as well so I'll look in to getting the four done all at once when the rears are at 1.6mm.

Coils are good all round with no surface rust, front shocks could do with a clean up as there is some rust present.

Handbrake is nice and strong, sitting at 6 clicks (About level with the seats), seat belts are all in good condition. All bulbs working, front wipers are okay but the rear has split and is half hanging off! Also no leaks detected in the engine bay which is nice! :p

Overall I am quite happy with how she is currently doing, an absolute reliable daily that can still drop clutch and disappear from the lights ;)

Here are some shots of her after a cheeky clean and hoover while the garage was quiet a couple of weeks ago! (Removed all the hubcaps now as I prefer the steels!) :
