what did you do to your micra today ?

The channels, box sections & floorpans tend to rot from the inside outwards & the under seal carelessly applied tends to block the drain hole slots & retains moisture accelerating the oxidising corrosion process hidden unseen.
how come they have drainage holes in the first place? wouldn't it make more sense to just block the water getting in from the top?

Water & condensation gets into all sealed enclosures eventually & then cannot drain out.

K11 sunroofs drain into the sill’s box sections.

Cheap disposable Japanese K series cars had minimal base primer coat dusting applied to concealed internal box sections/sills.

I stripped mine back with a wire wheel then chopped or cleaned the metal as far back as I could , rust remover may help,
Rust treated, red oxide and painted and waxoiled
Rust treatment only works on cleaned up metal and will rust again if left uncovered
I also seam sealed.mine as the seam gaps are terrible

Funny Nissan waxed them new just it wears off over time, and considering how old they are it's bound to happen,

Funny Nissan waxed them new just it wears off over time, and considering how old they are it's bound to happen,

Inside the enclosed concealed cavities they are very sparing with corrosion protection in order minimise costs & at the same time maximise profits by selling more repeat new vehicles as quickly as possible, that’s why they are in business?

Making disposable lightweight cheap Japanese K series vehicles long lasting is not in their best interests to maximise big businesses profits.

In this instance, they made the mistake of over engineering the vehicles in the 1990s without charging correspondingly for it, due to its lower middle market segment positioning.

This resulted in Nissan becoming financially insolvent in 1998 & was bailed out by the state owned Renault in return for Renault taking a 51% controlling share ownership of Nissan.

This in turn resulted in Renault designed products being badge engineered as Nissans in year 2001 onwards & subsequent Renault mediocrity to this day.

planned obsolescence basically, very annoying really considering if you're going to make something you should make it as well as you possibly can imo

pride in your work and all that
Sadly that's buisness. Gone are the days of making things last. There are things from years back for example heaters. TVs food mixers all kinds of things still working fine to this day but it's better for companies mass producing things to last x amount of years to get profits

there's a clothes dryer at my parents house that was a wedding gift 28 years ago and as far as I know it's never needed a bit replacing all these years, still drys a load of towels in 60 minutes

Companies big greed over money with everyone middle-management and above trying to live the 'wolf of wallstreet' lifestyle has left a lot of good honest people short these last few years

Tho it's funny how m my they have lasted over other brand models of the same years ,
And compared to new nissan they still seem to be out lasting them hana

1990s Nissans were over engineered designed & built to a higher engineering quality standard than most of its competitors at that time, thus durability & reliability was superior to most of its mid-market price segment competitors.

I would go further & say that the K11 design engineering /build quality & subsequent reliability & durability was equal to or better than my 1990 Mercedes W124 series estate of the same era.

The Merc gave disproportionately more problems with ABS, electric sunroof, dual heating ventilation controls, driver’s electric window failures & excess engine oil consumption @ 8 years old on 85K miles than all my four old banger K11s experience put together.

I realise I am not comparing apples with apples here as the Merc was bigger & crucially more complex with more superfluous crap to go wrong when you really just need it to be reliable so you can get to work every day in it?

My W124 was all mouth & no trousers in my experience of usefulness in comparing it to the K11?

I wonder if there's a way to buy one of these flimsy cars and while it's still new modify and over-engineer it yourself

I've never been one of these people happy with buying a new car every 1-5 years I like the idea of something I know is going to last and be reliable for a long time, but it seems like I'm a minority that car manufacturers don't want to cater to in that respect. There's something to be said for having something you're familiar with over something shiny and new that smells like boot polish

So chopped the rear vent, and made a inner mud flap that follows the line of the bumper lip and boot line but also is strong enough to be used as the lower bumper mount
It's a bit better copy of what I did on bumblebee last year after have that work so wellView attachment 64185View attachment 64186View attachment 64187View attachment 64188View attachment 64189View attachment 64190View attachment 64191

Nice fabrication work ... like that

Thanks! This is what my original first setup looks like , this one just Carries it on but trys to reduce on water traps, gaps ect and doesn't require the baffle off the a pillar ,
Cause just chopping the vent and leaving it causes problems with water ,rust ect and throws alot up behind the bumper , this stops most of that and secures the bumper

I got very lucky and found a performance exhaust manifold for £30. Its from the Cube Z10 Alpha, only released in Japan around 2000 I think so super super rare!!!

That with the Almera airbox and an exhuast system off a 1.0 litre model, Nissandra is sounding and feeling very zoomy :D

For comparison - Z10 on the left, stock on the right.

Honestly just super lucky on Ebay. I check it every couple of days just in case.

The guys K11 finally rusted out, so he was just getting shot of everything.

For the manifold you can have some luck with Yahoo Japan. Honestly more likely to get it from their or Austrailia.

Chasing down an intermittent knock underneath, often when reversing. Found the rear engine mounting is shot and ordered a new one (from Australia, as half the price of UK main dealer) but took a closer look today and found that there is also a "gearbox support rod" running from the centre of the mounting to under the gearshift and a (rubber?) block there too, which *may* also be faulty. It looks as if I need to drop the exhaust off and possibly remove a heat deflecter plate too to get at the underside of the gearstick, so job postponed everything for another day. Also hoping that a set of portable ramps will give enough ground clearance to do the work simply (as the engine will have to be jacked up while the mounting is changed) - or should I be looking for use of a four post lift in a workshop? Anyone else done this? Meanwhile I'll put up with the knock :)

I put some more music on the SD card in the radio, does that count? The wiper is beginning to squeak again, but it's too wet to do anything about it. And when it's dry I tend to forget about the squeak...

What did I do my Micra over the Winter? ...

1. Tried the magnetic sheet idea over sunroof to stop soaking wet drivers floor - is now only a mildly damp floor. STILL got something happening despite sunroof drain holes/pipes and bulkhead sealing up. One day, one day .....

2. Quick rush service ... better one in Summer

3. Found I got a slow on NSR ... weather also killing my enthusiasm to get a proper fix

4. Paniced over a slightly cloudy exhaust emission that as one of the guys suggested was again just cold weather

5. Drove Lands End to John O Groats with the old girl on New Years Day.

6. Took all our old fencing & garden rubbish to the skip with trailer! 1.0 ltr Vs nearly 2 tons. And 1.0 ltr won!

7. Read the blogs on here to rob great ideas off more knowledgeable Micra folk ... got some good stuff to do.

A quiet Micra phase on the work side but the journey side was ace!

I hoovered it? not the whole thing just the front seats and footwells

and I fixed the lock on my petrol flap, I want to take the doorcards off and fix the locks in the doors while I have the tools to do it but it's too wet/windy/cold

Yep, the weather isn't great. Hopefully it starts to get more warm in March/April

Hoovered it? Are you mad man? :) .... never before an MOT!

Actually replacement locks is also on my Summer list. Fed up of using 4 different keys .... the perils of having it crowed open a few years back!

I'm pretty fortunate, as the weather here has been pretty good, so, over winter;

Have totally stripped down one of the 1.0's (which had turned into swiss cheese) for spares for the other 1.0, in order to keep it going while I prepare the newly acquired 1.4.
Servicing this has found me happily buried in the engine compartment most days, fitted a new clutch cable, overhauled the battery tray, dismantled and serviced the throttle body and sensors, along with removing every plug/connector and cleaning them up, as well as the usual service items. Not much of a service history with this one, it's mainly been 'Spaniardised'. Think along the lines of badly maintained, if at all. Today was the best day though, as I fired her up for the first time in nearly a month, and she is running sweet!

When the 1.4 is ready the 1.0 and I are going rallying in the olive groves. Happy days!

Today I learnt how the Spanish 'mot' system works; After booking it in you take your car in to an approved centre which only does mot's (itv's), drive the car through stopping in four places. First they check emissions, steering, belts, etc and have a look under the bonnet, secondly you move forward and they check wipers, lights and horn, thirdly onto the rollers to check brakes then lastly over the inspection pit where he checks the underside, steering, suspension, etc. You stay with the car the whole time and do everything, aside from the emissions bits. Whole process (from in the door to out) took no more than 20 minutes (the car had no problems and passed with 1 advisory) including the 5 minutes at the end where the same chap gives you your paperwork and windscreen sticker for the next year. Interesting to see how another country does it, and no more loitering round on industrial estates, though I did miss popping for a brew and bacon buttie.

That all seems quite civilised, I must say. Around here there is usually a long wait in the company of several anxious car owners. And of course in the UK and now in Ireland the inspection lifts have failed their NCT/MOT.

Excellent work sir. Embedding that performance stuff in a stock looking car is very cool. Impressive

Serviced Toady the k12 ntec diesel!
oil
oil filter
air filter
pollen filter

I always have to fight the oil filter, i always hand tighten yet it's flippin solid when i try to take it off!
Very limited access, so i go in from above after removing air intake pipe and a breather pipe. This then leaves me with just enough room to get a oil filter plier / wrench on it and slowly loosen it. Then it's back underneath to spin off and remove!

Of course it snowed on my day off when the new expansion bottle, full set of slider bolts for both callipers and new fuel filler pipe arrived? MOT isn’t due until October but I like to keep ahead of the restoration work. It will be a pain in the ass when the Almera mot expires next month, no mots in NI for a while, you get an exemption certificate But the insurance companies can decide your cover is void if they deem the car unroadworthy

Prepped the 'soon to mot expire' 1.0 for rallying. I say rallying, for that read throwing around the olive groves spending as much time sideways as is humanly possible. Prep mainly consisted of stripping out the interior and as much dash as possible, enveloping the radiator in chicken wire, buying a huge roll of gaffa tape for masking of lights, etc, and fitting the most worn set of tyres on the rear/grippiest on the front I could find to assist my attempts at practising scandinavian flicks. Sideways slots booked for next Friday, so excited I don't think I'll sleep!

I'm going to paint code the bumper on my 2nd facelift micra, change the belts and put a 1st facelift bonnet (smaller badge) on. That's my plan next week. Hardly, doubt I get it all done by next week ?

My new YouTube video is out!

In this one, I talk about the Janspeed 4-2-1 - cost, where to get it, gains, and a quick fitting guide!

I also do a sound test of what a Micra sounds like with just a Janspeed 4-2-1 and a stock rest of exhaust!

If you've followed all my previous mods, then with this, you'll finally be looking at over 100bhp!

Thanks for watching!

Also, this one is for all the 1.0 people!

the government mot centres did away with the inspection pits and got car lifts instead, most of the lifts are structurally cracking under the strain and are unsafe to go under.. they are only able to inspect 4 year old cars and taxis on the ground in the belief that the running gear and metal work will still be sound. All test dates for older cars have been cancelled until the lifts have been replaced in all 14 test centres
