Squeal from wheels when turning left

Hi, car is a 2008 1.2 Micra with 57k miles & full dealer history. Recently its developed a loud squeal from what sounds like the front wheels, which happens whenever the steering wheel is turned to the left, even if it's just nudged slightly. The noise stops when the steering wheel is turned straight again or when the brakes are applied. Any ideas or suggestions on where to start would be gratefully received as I don't have much spare cash so want to avoid taking it to a Nissan dealer. Thanks in advance.

Power steering fluid low
Worn out belt
Failing power steering pump.

Those are the common causes.

Edit.
Sometimes this happens due to over use of full lock when parking in tight spots.
Should be wise to check the p.steering fluid levels, the belt and also the power steering column for leaks.

Thanks for the info. I checked but cant find a PS fluid reservoir anywhere so I presume the PS is electric?? The steering also feels a little bit heavier than I expected for a small light car, I noticed this about 3 months ago but the squeak started around 3 weeks ago, & the car only does about 20 miles a week :)

PS it's electric. If there is any fault with your PS you will deffinetely have a MIL on your dashboard.
If there is nothing it s probably a mechanic issue.

Hi, no warning lights thankfully (I've read up on the problems with electric PS on Micras!) so will ask a local mechanic to take a look.

The brake pad wear indicator lets us know when its time to change the pads they look like this image below. The warning sound is to remind us and this save the replacing the discs as well that may become damaged/scored by the indicator.

Sounds like brake pads to me, if it's getting down to the backing plate because the slide pins are out of grease it can happen.. Also pulls to one to side somewhat
