Micra k10 - Running rich - Do I rebuild the carburetor?

Hi All,

My 1988 Micra K10 automatic seems to be consuming a lot of fuel and requires me to press on the accellorator as I turn the key to get it to start. I can also slightly smell fuel when its running but not when the engine is off.

The Idle is a little rough, but once its running it doesn't stall. Other than that it drives well.

I've run a huge ammount of carb cleaner through the carb as well as redex through the engine to try to clean any blocks out. I got a bit of a performance boost but it didnt fix the fuel consumption or difficulty starting.

I've tried adjusting the idle screw on the carb but it just spins (do I need a special screw driver for it?).

I'm thinking that to fix it I have to rebuild the carb and hopefully it will consume less fuel and just start on the key?

Would appreciate anyones input before I undertake this incase I'm wrong or there is a more simple fix.

Many thanks for your time.

Same happens with me it is a 1.2 5speed manual, I need to give some gas to start the engine and it consumes a lot of fuel, and when I am going downhill without the accelerator it gives some pops (which is cool though) I am thinking on another carb for mine

You both sound like you're running rich, I'd be checking ignition components and then look at stripping the carb down and setting it up correctly.

Thank you for the responce. Do you know of a guide to checking the ignition components - Is it in the haynes manuel? Whats it under? What parts often need replacing?

Edit: Just ordered a new ignition coil. Previous owner mentioned he had just replaced the spark plugs and distributor. Will fit that and report back.

Hi All,

So, the new ignition coil arrived. I fitted it and its made no difference. (wasted £28 :().

What else could it be that's making it run Rich?

Many thanks.
