Steering Shaft Upper Bolt

Hi, can any one please help me here (i do not know much about car mechanic) and check on their car and confirm if there should be a NUT in the steering shaft upper bolt. Please find below a picture of the upper bolt from my car. Thank you.

Hi Kevin27,

If this is the joint at the top of the shaft nearest the steering column mechanism itself then I believe it does not need a nut.

The diagram below should help you.

Is your mechanism loose somewhere?

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Animal,

Yes it's the top bolt,Thanks for confirming that.

Yes, i have been feeling a knocking sensation when turning my steering wheel completely at right or left / making tight turns. Like i feel it in my hands(steering wheel) (nothing like a loud sound or from the outside etc).

Hi Kevin,

It's most likely at the steering rack or wheel end so as John D states could be a loose steering rack mounting or you could check the tie rod ends (especially the rubbers mounts as they wear/split and allows play in the joint).

I'd get the car up on axle stands and check all places up to the wheels from the steering mechanism and see if there is anything that seems loose or has too much play in it.

Thanks,

Chris

The picture shows it's not the original OEM bolt, so this has been removed and replaced previously.

Check the carpet, sometimes the intermediate shaft catches on the carpet. I would expect it to be road wheel end because if there was a knock from the eps it would generate a fault at some point.

Whilst the eps knows the steering position and knows it's limits from end to end it could steer one way for ever and not care!!! The motor in the EPS is geared so therefore it wouldn't just knock at endstops.

Check the bearing on the intermediate shaft (bar from back of eps) check they are flush and not moving

Hope this helps.

Jason.

I found one as a demonstration see video link.

Also, just looking at the photo that might be a retro-fitted system. TRW lost the contract for the K12 in 2010. There was a mass build of stock to support warranty but also the new OEM designed a retro-fit system that could replace the original TRW EPS system, I believe it was a Delphi unit.

Would need to see photo of EPS to be sure though.

Jason.

Hi Jason, How can you be sure it's not the original OEM bolt (sorry for this dumb question)?

Kevin,

I used to work at TRW and I know what the intermediate Shaft bolt looks like. And the TRW EPS, that isn't it.

There was a retro-fit system that was fitted post 2010 and warranty systems pre 2010 which I'm not sure about because it was manufactured by a competitor.

Ok,Thanks. Is there a link or a photo you can share with me, to show how the real Shaft bolt and the TRW EPS look like. (My Micra is year 2008)
