K11 Lumpy Idle

Anyone got any tips to help fix a lumpy idle on my K11 CVT 1.0 1994 Micra? it does not cut out but does seem like it is close. Also smells rich from the exhaust but this is from a cold start.

I'm thinking a good service, some new plugs/filters will help it wonders but don't want to throw money at it if this could be something quite serious as with my other concern below.

It has a rattle, obviously not a piston slapping, but sounds like the chain, for now, I'm hoping it's the worn water pump/alternator belt ( this car was not looked after since 2013)

I've been quoted by a garage near me for a full service, including diagnosing the noise from the timing chain area, £100, but I can see this will rapidly rise should it need more work.

Any input or should I just cut and run from this car?

Disconnect the MAF from the throttle body, if it fixes the idle just leave it off.
If not then it may be the old dry joint problem in the throttle body.
Just use the search function to find all the details you need to sort it buddy.

Cheers, appreciate it. Can hear the timing chain when idling, is this a concern? it's going for a full service next Monday I feel it's not had one for a good 20k miles.

Is the connector shown in this image the MAF sensor?

Yup ....just squeeze the sides and it will pop out.
It will cough and splutter for a few minutes, but will settle down to give a smooth idle if it was the MAF.
It will take a few days to really settle and then be fine, it will also idle a bit lower with it off but doesn't matter.
I ran one of mine for over two years with it disconnected.
Lets hope it sorts your problem :)

Any tips for getting it out? buggers really in there and my hands are not the best fit LOL.

LOL - been in there a long time, squeeze the sides, there's a couple of small clips, yes, they are tough little sods but will pop out in the end.

Still cannot get the thing off, does not matter though, took the top cover off the airbox to find a brand new filter, and the throttle body looking suspiciously new.

Beginning to suspect timing chains stretched, which is a major job and more than I am willing to spend on a £400 car. If this is the case once the V5 arrives I'll be cutting my losses before they mount, and heading back to Peugeot XUD's which I am more familiar with.

the plug on the front of the t/b is the idle control valve, pollyp posted up some info on checking the O ring and setting the idle, and i would check the voltage signal on the lambda too (middle wire)

Wait so it's not the MAF sensor? where is it then?

Will have to search up this O Ring, as for the Lambda let me guess the one right at the front of the engine mines as Bosch job looks like it's been there a while. Is there another? and what settings am I looking for having never used a multimeter!

the dizzy engine has a different throttlebody to davy,s coilpack engine mate, and the middle wire should be bouncing around .5v at fast idle when warm (earth the meter on the engine or whatever)

try adjusting this black allenkey idle screw first, thats the tps in the pic and the maf is above it

you screw it out to bleed more air past the throttleplate, and disconnecting the maf is usually what the coilpack owners do to diagnose their notorious maf

Okay clockwise that out to raise the idle. The maf is connected but I assume doing nothing given my engine lacks the coil pack?

Turned it anti-clockwise 1/4 a turn, tick over from cold seems a LOT better, will know how it feels next time I can drive it (currently on provisional insurance)

Put £15 in it yesterday surprised it took it to half a tank! With the 1.0 attached to the CVT box what kinda MPG can I expect?

You should be looking at 40+ mpg in that little girl, and the tank is only 6 gallons.
Depends how big your right foot is on what mpg you get.

Had it out again today for a 20mile drive over the Moors and back to home, it seems happier at idle. But is noticeably running rich even with the temp gauge showing the engines warmed up? could this be the Lambda sensors needing changing?

Got the car back running really sweet, the garage cleaned out the throttle body and replaced all items needed in a major service.

Not run it from cold since Africa has arrived in the UK, but from the drive home from the garage, it felt a like a new car!.
