Engine Highs, Gearbox Lows

Hi guys,

I've been rattling the same ideas around my head over and over, and can't work out what the best thing to do is, and was hoping for some more informed opinions to maybe help me make up my mind.

Basically, I have 2 K11s, a 1.0 (61k, lovely engine & body, well looked after and has a good few years in it yet) and a 1.3 (120k, ragged but still pulls, mot fail on a lot of rust, to much work to keep on the road) there are a few options available to me, i.e engine swaps, cam swaps etc. And after a few weeks of research Im still a little confused about best engine to gearbox match etc. Both are dizzy caps, both are 1999s, but the clutch on the 1.0 is very high and quite juddery. although the gearbox on the 1.3 is leaking, the return spring has gone and its rattly when i move the shifter.

Im lost, I don't know weather to bin the 1.3 all together, salvage parts and tune the 1.0. I really wanted to turbo the 1.3 and again have come at a loss research wise as to whether you can do it to the 1.0 and if its even worthwhile.

Anyhow, if you stuck with me and are still reading, I would love your opinions, and any links to guides/info I may have missed.

Cheers!

If you want power then the most sensible route is stick the 1.3 engine in. Not that you can't tune the 1.0 but by putting the bigger engine in you get a free (nominal) 20bhp and much more headroom if you want to turbo.

If you're going to the trouble of swapping engines then mating the gearbox from the 1.0 with the 1.3 engine gives you more urgency. If you crack open the gearbox skim the flywheel (use the 1.3) and put in a new Luk clutch, release bearing and spring.

If you are turboing you will want the 1.3 box for the longer final drive, if it's serviceable. A well done turbo conversion pulls really well and you want to enjoy all that in gear torque.

Just my opinions but whatever you do good luck!

Hmm ok, yeah that makes sense about the 1.3 box for turboing, What I really want is a car I can drive daily, that it speedy enough to surprise a few people. But I suppose any tuning I do to the 1.3 engine its always going to be restricted by the final drive gear. So maybe try and get the whole lot in the 1.0 shell and service it all before actually fitting it.

Hiya, sorry to jump in on your post, but ive a similar dilema. Got a 1.0 k11 and im picking up a 1.4 auto k11. Was gonna just tinker with 1.0, but ive always liked speed.
Id like to know what you do :)

I just stuck the 1.4 in my original 1.0. kept the 1.0 Gbox and flywheel. Best bang for your buck.
