North American PAO owners

Seeing that there aren't many PAO's in North America, thought it may be worthwhile to find out who and where we are.
You don't have to post your real name (your choice) but which mods you've done (if any) what you plan to do (if any) and what country/state/province/city you reside in would be great. Might help too in case one is ever stolen.

I'll start.
Owner; Heryshaf USA, Houston, Texas. Year; 1990 PAO, automatic. Date purchased or imported; 7/15. Color; Now it's white but was originally grey/green. Imported it this way). Mileage; Approx 83,000 km. Mods; Changed the carb to a Weber 32/36 (original carb was bad) added electric fuel pump (original was bad also) removed egr valve and all the vacuum operated bits in the engine. Looking for a new ring and pinion or a trans change to get lower revs on the highway (right now, about 3900 at 55mph).

I'm finally back tinkering with mine after a 7 month hiatus. Since it's been on the road (last 2 weeks) have gotten a lot of questions and thumbs up. It's amazing how many looks you get yet didn't pay supercar prices for the attention.

Mark, Chicago, 1989, automatic, 11/15, aqua gray, 96,000 km, folding roof, no mods, appears to be factory stock, except the seats are vinyl/leather so they may not be original. Right now I need to replace the timing belt/water pump. I was going to try to do this myself, but now I'm thinking I'll get the shop to do it.
 
My name is Mark. I live in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. 1989 Nissan PAO, VIN#PK10106699, aqua grey, automatic with power steering, power brakes, fog lamps with the white bar and of course the canvas roof. She's all stock and all original with a little over 121,000 km. The front struts need to be replaced because they're very soft and the left one squawks badly. I have to open the sunroof manually with a crank the electric motor is weak. The rear bumper needs to be repaired. I just tell everyone that the previous owner backed into Godzilla,s toenail.
I also bought a 1987 Nissan Be-1 in August of last year. VIN#BK10007170, onion white, automatic with power brakes and canvas roof. She too is all stock ad original with a little over 109,000 km. I have no plans for any mods on either car. I drive them sparingly and take them to shows and cruise nights. All in all they're a lot of fun.

Sorry for the tardy response, have had issues with EVERY car/truck I own. Too numerous to list.
So, looks like there's 4 of us in the US. I did see one for sale here in Houston but didn't find it or lot it was on.
What's your top speed? What kind of mileage you getting? How does it handle and brake. Is the a/c working and have you converted to 134a? I'm working on a direct replacement for the 12 that was in the system

Also, anyone found somewhat readily available parts? I've been daily driving it for the past 6 weeks and finally got all the paperwork done with a new Texas title coming for mine.

Robert's cars are the cats meow for Pao's and Figaro's.

It seems we have a rare car, at least in the US. I know I get asked all the time what it is and where did it come from. Usually, someone thinks it's British. Got a thumbs from a cop too!
 
I think there are a lot more than 4 U.S. owners. Not sure why more people don't post on here. My dash beeps at 66 mph, so my top speed is 65 mph. Haven't check mileage yet. The front of my Pao is very bouncy, so I suppose it needs new shocks, but the bounce is kinda fun so I'm in no rush to "fix" it. Brakes are good. A/C works very well, not sure if it's been converted.

Eddie from Houston, TX. Just purchased a 1990 Pao. Aqua grey, canvas top, manual, bone stock, havent checked the mileage.
Top speed is 65, also getting the beeping once at 65.
A/C works like a charm even in this horrific Houston heat.
The radio is not working, only bummer I have with the car so far. Not sure if it's an easy fix, anyone know of any common fixes?
Definitely won't be using the Pao as a daily, will most likely be the weekend warroir to drive around town.
Glad I found this forum!
@Heryshaf let me know if want to meet up sometime on a weekend. Glad to know there's another Pao in the same city.

Howdy! I'm Brad from Tyler, Texas. I just bought a Pao. It's Aqua Gray. I'm still waiting for it to be delivered. It's got 144,000km. It's a canvas top and an Auto. I'll need to put some 3-point seat belts in the back if you have any places for me to look. Only thing I'll need to fix currently is the A/C. I'm planning on it being a daily driver around Tyler... we'll see. I'm super stoked though!
 
Hi everyone. Levent from Leesburg, GA. Just bought an '89 Pao in aqua grey, auto, with 98K. Been a fun car to drive around in this weekend as we picked it up Friday. It has a few little minor issues, but drives very well. It'll be a car we keep a long time, hopefully.

My name is Darron, I live down in sunny South Florida. I picked up a PK10GFW (Aqua Grey, 5spd, Canvas) 3 weekends ago in Maryland and drove her home. Last June she saw the timing belt kit replaced and all new suspension (which is simply horrid) including 2 control arms and 1 CV joint replaced. I am still trying to sort our shock/spring replacement and have picked up some early Miata wheels to step up from the stock 12 inchers. I have parts sitting at home to splice a Bluetooth amp in after the stock stereo (I'll get to keep the stock tape deck and looks but will be able to pair my phone directly to the amp), replace the rear 4x6 speakers and will be fabricating a removable bracket to add two 5 1/4 speakers below the stock stereo. Hopefully this will make the stereo more usable without permanently changing anything on the car.

My current suspension sits unevenly without anyone in the car, the right side is a 1/2 to 3/4 lower than the left, this of course gets worse when a driver is in the car. Also, tire wear indicates that the alignment is significantly out (driver front definitely has positive camber). So hopefully soon I'll pull and inspect the strut and shock assemblies. She also leaks moderately from the rear main seal, so I'll be pulling the tranny this year to address that.

I'm super keen to have stumbled across this page. Chicago Mark has posted an answer to one of my other issues, the rear hatch shocks. I hoping to find a place more local than shipping them to Canada but it was great to see someone figure out a solution.
 
Hey Everyone! I just bought a 1989 Pao. Aqua blue, solid tops and a 5 speed. I am thinking it needs new struts because turning it is noisy. I bought it with an aftermarket steering wheel which is annoying. Looking to install an OEM steering wheel, replace the rear bumper and do some chrome work.
 
Howdy. James here from Savannah GA. Just brought my 1990 Pao 5spd with ragtop 600 miles from MD. Only issue was the 105kph ding ding dinger. Anyone know how to get rid of that? Hoping to fix/upgrade the suspension. Other than that, things went great. Hope to hear from others. Cheers

Hi Gordon -

I recommend a Retrosound stereo - lots of options to match the interior, and has bluetooth...etc..
For speakers, I believe the fronts are 4" and the rear are 4x6". Just a note: I had to run new speaker wire to the rear speakers. The factory wiring couldn't handle the load of the new speakers and stereo.

Hey everyone! I am waiting for my PAO to get here. I'm Justin and I live on Long Island, NY. I've been researching as much as I can about the parts and what I have to do when it arrives. I ordered a couple oil filters from Japan since a place I tried to order from in NJ is going to take two months (although they were a good deal). I also made an excel spreadsheet with any part numbers I could find. I was curious if you guys found if any of the first gen Micra parts are compatible, because if they are Rockauto has them for Canadian customers ( I noticed the Canadian model has a 1.2L and ours has just under a liter, although the engines look identical), but the chassis parts i.e.brakes and whatnot look the same). One thing I couldn't find anything on was the headlights; did anyone make any adjustments to switch them to drive on the right hand side of the road? And what oil filters have you guys been using? Sorry for the bombardment of questions and thanks in advance if anyone can answer any of them.

From what I gather the stereo sound is inherently poor. While I have an original radio/cassette I think we’ll use a nice portable Foogoo XL Bluetooth speaker. It’s heavy and triangular so it won’t flop around the car, the sound is incredible and it will play at high volume for nearly 48 hours on a single charge. The “radio” will simply be my iPhone. An added bonus is that the speaker works through hands free phone and has a noise cancelling microphone built into it.
Just my 2 cents.

Hello everyone! I've had my PAO for about a month now and am using it as a daily. Bought it and it shakes quite a bit at idle so I've got new engine mounts for it that will be installed soon. Car came with BOSCH fog lights which I've removed for the moment to remove rust and repaint. I need to repaint the grill, can anyone tell me what specific color to use? Thanks Y'all!

Nice looking PAO! I'm digging that new custom interior. I got mine yesterday. It needs a new ragtop, but overall the car is solid. I will let you know if I ever decide to take it up north. Enjoy!

I think that's just how they used to do the heat (just in the foot vents) Mine does this too, and my 1990 Ford Festiva used to do the same thing.
 
Hi, my name is Dave and i am from Saxonburg Pennsylvania, a small town north of Pittsburgh.
I just bought a 1989 Pao, Aqua Gray automatic. It has about 77K miles on it. I really wont be able to drive it until i get insurance and register it. I am going to get a PA "antique" registration plate for it. It is in pretty good driver quality condition. A/C works, as does the folding roof. No rust to speak of. Paint has a decent shine. INterior is in good condition. Radio functions, speakers are crap. I bought it for mostly my wife to have fun with, but we will both enjoy it i am sure. Mostly just going to go to local car cruises and such, occasional fun drive in it. Have 3 other vehicles right now, and looking for one more.
 
Looking to replace the shocks and bushings all around, i know the Pao shares the same chassis as the Micra. Would a Micra's replacement shocks work for the Pao?

Yes. I bought the rear shocks (which came with new bump stops and bushings) on roackauto and the front shocks I bought on eBay. I had to buy new bump stops and bushings for the front from Amayama in Japan. The K11 shocks are a little stiffer, which is what I installed for the fronts on my car, but you have to use K10 shocks in the rear because the rear K11 shocks won't mount up.

Johnny Utah from Salt Lake City. Just got my ‘89 Pao, auto, aqua grey, 97k kms. It’s in really nice shape. No mods. Glad I found this forum...doesn’t seem to be a ton of Pao info out there.

I sold my PAO recently, but I still have my Be-1. It's pretty clear that I couldn't replace it for what I got for it. I might be selling the Be-1 soon and the price on that one will be around $10,500. I have pictures available. Mark

This car is built on the K10 Nissan Micra chassis which was sold in Canada. However, the Canadian one came with the MA12S (1.2L) and the PAO has the MA10S (1.0L). The oil and fuel filter can be bought from the parts store (Bosch 3400 oil filter) (fuel filter TWD BF932 at NAPA). Distributor rotor-NAPA EC892 Distributor Cap- Yec 2216201B01Wires-NGK 8116 I bought the plugs from Japan. Some people bought the ones on RockAuto under the Micra, but I think the gap is slightly different. You should get on Facebook and join the Nissan PAO fan club. Even if you're not into Facebook, it's worth joining for the club. There are really helpful people on there. Hello. I recently bought my 1989 Pao from a gentleman in Houston. I'm in California (yes, I know it will need CARB certification to be legally registered or sold in California). Does anyone know of anyone who has attempted this? Thanks everyone, I hope hear more from you on this site.

I have found some brake and suspension parts for the Pao on sites like "The Figaro Shop" UK and occasionally I'll type in part numbers on Amazon USA and find some stuff there as well. Hope this helps a little bit. Enjoy and happy hunting.

Just over 100,000 miles but engine rebuild 4,000 ago in Japan (they say that makes a difference)

She is all stock and that is how I would like to keep her. Need to get new vinyl in the spring. She is a beauty...if you like akward, and I do.

The ding ding dinger is located behind the speedometer and can be removed. You must remove the Speedo to get to it.
 
Ken in NY with a high mileage recently acquired ivory Pao. Needs a new steering rack, which I'm debating whether to fix ($$), replace with a Figaro rack or go with manual steering. Anyone changed out their original rack for a manual or Figaro rack? I need your information, PLEASE. Also, I fear there are some transmission issues with this poor little thing but until I address the steering, I won't even get to the transmission. If the transmission is also toast, it may become a parts car. One can only shovel so much money into an endless pit.

Headlights shouldn't need any adjustment. Whether you're on the left or the right, the lights point forward. Oil filters are available closer than Japan. don't need to be genuine Nissan. From what I've read, the Micra K10 is closest to the Pao. Sparetoo parts in England has suspension parts at excellent prices.
