Skinners Sprint Micra

I'm driving a mk6 Fiesta Zetec S daily at the moment, I must say they make a good base for track cars - seen loads of Mk6 ST's on the forum being used in track championships and getting awesome results!

Even stock it handles nicely, I think it would make a good replacement for the micra

If you are in the road going sprint class then, you won't need a HANS (or FHR to be correct) device.

Clio 172/182 would be a good base car, or a Civic Type R. But when you are driving just a road car, where as the Micra is much more of a developed weapon, and when really 'on it' much more rewarding...

Too much history invested in our Micra now to move away, standard road car to WRGB!

Anyway you need to be out on the sprints in April, since I have now worked a work trip to IoM that 'happens' to be one during the sprints :)

I am on the same dilemma at the moment.. The money that I will have to spend to get the Micra to my liking will easily get me a fiesta ST on reigers with an ATB and nice cpw...

I don't know what to advise you. I had a Clio 172 cup which I sold because I didn't had much fun and it was nothing extraordinary..
I think you need a type r.. You have the hands and I am sure it will help you develop further.

2016 Update

Hi folks, a bit of an update for 2016 so far. The 3 day hillclimb will see the car out for all 3 days again this year with a 2 day sprint in the pipeline for near the end of July fingers crossed.

The 90deg inlet adapters are welded up & being honed flat. I've made various size gaskets to be swopped around for a best fit.

The linkage on the Jenveys will need to be lengthened & re balanced accordingly. The throttle bodies will now benefit from 40mm trumpets & will be right in line with the hood scoop. (Foam filter for road use & il make a mesh stone filter for race day)

The gearbox will be pulled and a 1.3 standard final drive replacement put in. Gripper tarmac spec LSD with new bearings and seals, slightly slower acceleration but longer gearing and top end will hopefully be a benefit.

Finally a solid rear gearbox mount as well. :)

Nice! Completely stock or just the final drive Paul?

If it's a totally standard box you'll be lucky to get out of 3rd. Our previous build would be just shy of 100mph in 3rd just before redline...

Just a standard box with refreshed bearings Dave. 3.8 final drive i guess? id be happy with a longer drive as its screaming at 7K nearly to get 100mph at the minute and its all out of breath in 5th.

I do have a 1.0 coilpack box with the 4.4 final drive. But im not sure if i can swop the complete internals into the 1.3 dizzy box?

Im right thinking the CW/ pinion gear cannot just be swopped as its part of the saft?

Thank you guys :)

Another change i forgot to mention thanks to the kind folks at the MSA my AO48R tyres cannot be used in a road going class!

So this year il be trying the Toyo 888R out in a 185/60 setup on a slightly narrower wheel (BMW bottle caps)

Sadly it is under the control of the tyre panel, and Speed Committee have no say over what tyres on are on what list.

It also changes things for me, so now I will be in the modified class and use my stage slicks.

Will you be in amongst the highly modified crews then Matt?

I wouldnt mind but the Yoko's have under 200 miles on them!! so will have to be kept as a track day tyre i guess

Yes, though looking at times from last year of people in that class I should be close to them in terms of times. I only do the odd sprint so no point in buying tyres just for one event a year....

Raining all day but I've finally got everything back together and running.

Mapping needed to update the TPS position (very lean and piping and banging all over the place)

Balancing the butterfly's in needed as well

Have you ever run the full 8 injectors Dave?

No. I'm confident I'll get good atomization with today's injectors and make enough power. Plus I'm limited to the capabilities of the ECU.

I could run 8 injectors using my other ECU but I've decided to save that for the turbo engine, where I think it's better warranted given the goals there.

Solved the lean running and popping issue, cylinder 3 was giving a little pop of back pressure on idle.

There is a pair of tiny pin holes in the weld pulling air in, the manifolds back off, ground out with a good mix of chemical metal to repair that gap.

Il let that cure in the house for a few days before reassembly.

Saturday mornings booked for some more mapping :)

Can i ask what the pull was like on hills Dave?

Im in two minds of which box / combo to use.

Or just refresh the 5.1cwp setup i have now (with the machined box housing) (the selector rod has been ground for clearance which has always concerned me!

*warning very noob question alert*
I've seen alot of people running ITB's just bare trumpets like that, do you not need to run an air filter or is that it just not finished?

You should run a filter, especially on a daily or rally car, but during some dyno run footage you may see them without a filter

There's a big foam filter to go on once the muppet from myhermes decides to deliver it.

For the Hillclimb it will have a filter made from mesh as its only short sprints, there's about 4bhp between the two :)

Engine mapping!

After fitting new tear discs last weekend I noticed both rear hub bearings were goosed. Stripped the axel & sods the the hubs still havnt turned up, an old pair of spares were fitted late last night in order for some mapping today.

4 hours driving and I'm chuffed to bits with the results. A big improvement in torque from 3k to 6k showed from the lean AFRs when we first got going.

The longer inlet & trumpets have turned out to compliment each other well and the location right behind the bonnet vent a bonus.

Next is to rebuild the box with the diff and get back to looking at the suspension.

Thinking of going back to a shorter damper and lowering Spring combo

Busy weekend:

Gearbox has been pulled out to fit the new diff and refresh the bearings.

New rear wheel bearings have arrived, so when the new suspension arrives that will all be done together with the track rod ends at the front.

Rear gearbox mount has been refreshed ready for refit as well :)
