Engine swap

At the moment I have a 2001 1.0 coilpack engine in my car. For a little more umpff I thought I might stick a 1.4 in it. I'll be keeping my 1.0 g/box in.

So. Dropping the engine in isn't a problem but I would like to know what clutch to use and also if my ECU would be OK or would it under fuel.
Can't really see that it would be a problem as the engine for all intents and purposes is the same. I assume just bore/stroke are different.
Why am I keeping the g/box? I love the ratios. They suit my driving.

Clutch should be fine. They should handle the power difference ok.

Ecu however I have no clue. Can't see there being a major difference.
Logic suggests if they use the same injectors they'll inject the same amount of fuel. Spark map however may vary and lower capacity engines tend to have more aggressive spark maps from what I've seen

Clutch should be fine, its the same anyway, just the preface 1.0 gas a smaller one iirc.
We like aggressive spark maps :) Hehe

I come from the days of 45DCOE carbs and dizzys so I'm not too conversant with regards spark maps and the like. Aggressive? Can anyone explain please.

Its like heavier weights on the dizzy bobbins, more ignition advance. I feel you with the modern stuff, cut my teeth on HS4's and 45D4's

to turbo or new lump :/ hmmm
i did a 1.0l to 1.4l, on my coilpack used originl ecu, gearbox, yes the bore and stroke is different, underfuelling shouldnt be a problem the 1l and 1.4 injectors are the same, and the fuelling should be adjusted by ecu, but mine ran fine on the 1l ecu :)

coilpack 1.0 and 1.4 have the same clutch, but the 1.0 flywheel is lighter tho, and yes the CG,s (clean and green) run a lot of ignition advance for emissions and economy reasons :)

Can I use the 1.0 f/w on the 1.4 for a quicker response or is it easier to just have the 1.4 on and machined lighter.

OK so the engine arrived today. Very pleased. No idea when I'll get chance to fit it at the mo as I'm so busy with work. Just a quick question. Is there enough play in the driveshafts and suspension with the strut removed to allow the shaft to come out of the gearbox. Also do they just pull/prise out.

yes they pop out, and the n/s hub will need some removal :) (i personally remove the hubnut and the 2 leg bolts)

OK thanks. Just wondered if I could get away with less work really. Didn't really want to remove the whole shafts, as more problems can arise taking more stuff apart. Sods law theory. (Anything that can go wrong will, and anything that can't go wrong will also). Cheers

Any of you guys out there in the manchester area got an engine hoist I could borrow. I can pay you in beer currency at a good exchange rate.

Here she is.

Only 16000miles on her. Can't wait to get round to fitting it.

if you check that CGA3 one, it wont have been machined here, like the 1.0 ones (there,s a limit to what you can safely remove from the coilpack ones)

^^^ join the club, the swap only takes about 4 hours without any special tools. If its something your not used to doing you'll manage it in a weekend no probs

Removing everything, i normally get it ready to drop. Support underneath with a jack on the sump, remove rear mount bolts, remove right hand mount and the gearbox bolts. Then prise gearbox off and lift down onto the floor, then undo the front and left hand mount and lift engine out

Just noticed your getting a crane so its alot easier removing and refitting it just takes time messing about with the crane but who said theres a rush? :)
