Driveshaft Separation

Hi All, Happy New Year!

I started putting the gearbox back in last night after changing the clutch. as i inspected the O/S driveshaft gaiter i thought i would replace it as it was close to spliting.

I changed the n/s one before Christmas so i understand the process although i am having a problem separating it to fit the new gaiter.

Please has anyone got any good tips!!

I have tried using a draft/punch but its just not wanting to shift. i don't want to buy a stretch boot and cone as i already has a spare boot.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Cheers

Matt

they usually just come off mate, secure the driveshaft and a swift blow with the hammer gets the joint off in my experience

it does need proper bashing in some cases

With a propper hammer.

Finally split the driveshaft (lump hammer FTW!!)

But the circlip looks different to the one from the n/s its only half a circle with a few indents in it, not seen one like this before, should it be ok to use?

I will post pics in a minute

thats broken. looks like its been misaligned & violently forced on from the spline marks.
they should be almost round with a small gap. when fitting, the outer diameter of the ring should only be larger than the driveshaft spline by 1/2 the thickness of the ring so that the diff spline doesn't hit a flat face perpendicular to the direction of the spline and jam.
also the ring should be held evenly centered on the spline by grease and only a slight tap is needed to overcome the spring ring and fully insert the shaft

Brilliant, thanks for the reply, i had guessed that it must have been broken as the indents lined up with the splines on the shaft just wanted to double check.

Where is the best place to get a new clip from? general local motor factors?

I gues thats why it was such a pain in the arse to get off.

Thanks again

i think you,ll have a mission getting one of those  you could easily make one out of piano wire or spring steel from a modelshop

I know you can buy them for a mini about 56p any idea on the shaft size of a mini though. i used to have one but i dunno what size they are

just find some steel wire with the same gauge, coil it round the shaft and snip the bits u need with wire cutters? fine adjust size with pliers

Sorted!!

I rang a few driveshaft companies, no luck! "we only sell them as part of a kit". called in at my local fastners place no luck, "we don't stock owt like that"
so round the carner to my local motor factors worth a shot i thought, i asked and the guy behind the counter went and had a word with another bloke and dissapeared for a few mins. he returned with a tatty brown paper bag with an assortment of ring clips in, matched two to the size of my broken one and
