Worn CV Joint

I posted a question about replacing a split cv boot a week or so ago, however upon closer inspection i think the whole joint may need to be replaced. Is this a job i can do myself??

Could someone give me a step by step guide to doing it please?

I am no stranger to doing big jobs on cars, i changed the full suspension system on my SKoda Octavia 1.8T, but just need to know the exact steps to take.

It is the outer joint at the driers side. Am i correct in assuming that i need to undo the big nut in the middle of the hub and then it is a case of knocking the old joint off the end of the driveshaft??

Also can anyone recomend a place to buy a new joint from?

Cheers

mostprob would be easier to get a whole new drive shaft with joints and just to a complete swap.

mind u do lose some gear box oil when you pull the shaft out so be ready to stick the other 1 in if you do that option

remove the plastic shield to let driveshaft move more when taking out, undo big nut, undo both suspension shock bolts and remove bolts, take off brake pipe clip on shock, put nut on joint threads wack the big nut untill joint loose from ftont hub, take off big nut, pull out and down on front hub and at same time pull joint out of hub, then off with cv boot wack joint off, grease cv joint clip on driveshaft and make the clip centre on the shaft with grease, make sure splines aligned on joint and shaft put big nut on joint, wack on new joint, then the rest is simple putting things back together,

o and dont use a cable tie on the cv boot as it will come off, make sure you use a proper metal cv boot tie wrap

How much roughly would this option cost?? And can you recommend anywhere to purchase from?

it'd not be much extra work to do as Fordy says above. just make sure you get someone holding the driveshaft into the box as you slightly 'tap' the cv joint off

that's because the guides section is only available to official members ;).

OK no worries, i am sure i will figure it out. I think i have done something similar on an old 1986 Nissan Sunny i used to own.

You could join to see the guide section, all for as little as £10.

I know, and it would. But i will probably only have the car til june or july anyway and i don't think it will be getting replaced with another Micra as we need something bigger for the wife and kids to run around in, also probably get a diesel next.

Budget will be about 4k if you have any suggestions??
