K12 temperature light

Hello

I have a 2003 1.2 s with 70k miles - the temp light comes on sometimes on a long journey and goes off again as soon as the ignition is flicked on and off - the engine doesn’t boil over so is this an electrical fault or sensor issue? Any help is much appreciated

If you mean at motorway speeds the engine is of course being additionally cooled by the massive airflow and is operating at relatively low revs for the comparative road speeds so I’d be surprised if you can even hear the electric fan at 60-70mph so it sounds like the water temperature is getting hot, the fan kicks in and the obvious drop in temperature, long journeys at moderate speeds so less air cooling is when you may notice it which means it’s operating as it should, same applies for lots of town stop start driving, this is when you should notice it the most bearing in mind weather the hot weather ambient temperature will affect the cooling system of the car, that seems like normal behaviour to me, anyone care to expand?

Can i ask if you have had the car long? sounds like a sticking thermostat but best to stop car next time and leave the engine running and see if fan kicks in, if it does I would recommend an engine flush for starters as its best to start there and see how it goes.

Also check your radiator for damage or blockage when you do a coolant flush??

Yes the level in the reservoir tank is max.
